sayed42Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA to store my gaming consoles and related accessories. Unfortunately, the compartments are a bit too tight—especially for consoles with ventilation slots and cables, space quickly becomes an issue. I also want to improve ventilation and make the devices more accessible.
My question is: How can I modify or adapt my KALLAX shelving unit to create more space for my gaming consoles? Are there proven methods, such as enlarging the compartments, adding extra shelves, or other practical modifications? I would appreciate any tips that help make better use of the limited space without having to buy a completely new unit.
Thanks in advance!

How can I modify or rebuild my KALLAX shelf to create more space for my gaming consoles?A common approach is to remove the middle shelves in each compartment to increase the height of the space. This works well with the KALLAX since the compartments are made from solid wooden panels that can be cut and filed. It is important to sand the edges carefully afterward and, if needed, seal them with paint or varnish to protect the surface.
Another important aspect is ventilation: Often, you should remove the back panel or drill larger ventilation holes to allow the heat from the devices to dissipate more effectively. Additionally, placing small feet on the bottom of the compartments to slightly elevate the consoles can significantly improve airflow.
If you are skilled with tools, the shelf can be disassembled in other ways and combined with different wooden panels to create larger compartments. It is essential to maintain stability throughout the modifications.
Which consoles do you have exactly? The dimensions might be helpful if you want to plan a specific modification.
Hello sayed42,
I would like to give you a brief guide on how to systematically modify your KALLAX shelf to create enough space for your game consoles.
1. Measurements: First, measure the exact dimensions of your consoles, including the cables, especially height and depth. Keep in mind that some ventilation space and room for connections are necessary.
2. Removing shelves: Many people remove the middle shelves to make the compartment larger. Make sure the shelf remains stable, though. If needed, support it additionally with small brackets.
3. Side panels modification: If necessary, you can cut out recesses or ventilation slots on the sides. Pay attention to clean cut edges to prevent any splintering.
4. Back panel removal: On some KALLAX models, the back panel can be easily removed. Alternatively, you can replace it with pegboards, which improve air circulation and make cable management easier.
5. Ventilation: It is important to avoid heat buildup – ideally, add small ventilation holes or even active fans if your shelf is placed in an enclosed space.
6. Cable management: Use cable clips or cable channels to keep the interior organized and avoid tangling.
In summary: modifying the shelf is definitely doable. The key points are accurate measurements, careful work, and good ventilation. If you’re unsure how to open up the shelf, I’m happy to offer more tips.
Even if the shelf seems too small at first, with targeted changes and good organization you can make a lot of useful space. 🙂

If you're not sure how to take the shelf apart, I’d be happy to give you some tips.Hello everyone! I agree with that – the KALLAX is actually a well-designed furniture system that really works with you if you have a bit of DIY skill.
What I tried myself: The boards aren’t very thick, so you can saw them quickly and smooth the edges with sandpaper, works great! After that, you can even install colored backing panels behind it to make the whole thing look stylish.

Another point is ventilation: Often you should remove the back panel or drill larger ventilation holesExactly, you shouldn’t underestimate ventilation. Otherwise, my Xbox almost overheated after just an hour of gaming. 🙂
A little tip: Use power strips with switches and place them directly inside the shelf. It saves you from cable clutter and makes the whole setup look much neater.
Good luck with the conversion – you’ll see, with a bit of patience and the right tools, it’s really fun!
