Before our move, we already enjoyed having nesting birds in our small row house garden, including blackbirds, pigeons, and a dunnock. Today, in the wooded area at the back of the property, we saw a pair of kites settle on an old beech tree to nest, which we are very excited about. The birds are too far away for photos with my current camera equipment, and I don’t want to disturb them. I’m thinking of borrowing a large telephoto lens when the young birds hopefully arrive.
Here, we mainly have cranes (which make rather strange sounds), plenty of sparrows, and occasionally you can also see the not-so-small birds of prey.

This year, a new birdhouse. Small birds are slowly coming to check it out. The woodpecker is also coming to inspect the small birds. It’s likely going to end badly again :-/

I have a 15 m (49 feet) tall fir tree in my garden. Last week, there was a sound like a duck; at the top of the tree sat a starling, imitating a duck/goose perfectly (starlings are capable of this). It probably flew home with wild geese!
Last year, there were common redstarts nesting on the flush tank in the old shed. That became their territory, and they fiercely defended it against anything that tried to come in. They sat on the roof near the chimney and made so much noise that you could hear them through the stove in the living room. They even flew into my car and had a party in there.
Those creatures are crazy. Let’s see if they come back this year.
