Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring whether there are sustainable wood care products and methods specifically suited for the IKEA Hemnes furniture series. Most of the Hemnes furniture is made from solid wood or specified wood types that require special care to maintain their durability and appearance.

My concern is how to care for this wood in an environmentally friendly and gentle way without relying on harsh chemicals or environmentally harmful products. Are there natural oils, waxes, or alternatives that have proven effective and do not negatively affect the surface of Hemnes furniture?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on sustainable care products, application tips, and potential pitfalls to be aware of before getting started. Does anyone have experience or concrete recommendations on how to care for IKEA Hemnes furniture in the most eco-friendly and effective way?

Thank you in advance!

Hello Brooksdu,

I understand that sustainability is important to you when it comes to wood care. The IKEA HEMNES series is known for its solid wood, mostly pine, which should be well-maintained in its natural state. Sustainable care here primarily means using products that are as natural and low in harmful substances as possible.

In general, I recommend:
- Care with linseed oil or organic care oils that nourish the wood surface while keeping it breathable.
- Waxes based on beeswax are also suitable, as they form a protective layer without sealing the wood completely.
- Avoid products containing solvents or high VOC levels (volatile organic compounds).

Tip: Test the product first on an inconspicuous spot to ensure the surface of the HEMNES furniture does not become discolored or greasy.

Regular maintenance, for example every few months, significantly extends the lifespan of the furniture. In general, cleaning should be done with mild soap and water; harsh cleaners are a no-go.

If you want to know more about the exact composition of sustainable care products, feel free to get in touch. I can also recommend some specific products.

Hello Brooksdu,

I find your concern very important, especially since IKEA furniture is often seen as affordable furnishing, and its maintenance is sometimes underestimated. Particularly with the HEMNES series, which is often made of pine wood, choosing a sustainable care product is not only a matter of appearance but also durability and environmental friendliness.

Regarding sustainable wood care for IKEA HEMNES, I would like to go into more detail about the chemical and physical properties:

- The wood surface of HEMNES is usually lacquered or waxed. This means there is already a protective layer that should not be damaged.
- Natural oils such as linseed oil or walnut oil work very well as maintenance oils but must be applied thinly to avoid creating a sticky surface.
- Waxes, especially beeswax, should be compatible with the existing finish – they are good for refreshing but can make the wood greasy if overused.

I recommend a two-step process:

1. Gentle cleaning with a pH-neutral, mild cleaner that leaves no residue.
2. A thin layer of a natural care oil or a wax-oil blend that closes the pores but remains breathable.

Before you start, it would be helpful to know whether your HEMNES furniture is untreated (raw wood) or already treated with clear lacquer or wax. This greatly affects the next steps.

You can also test how the material reacts on a small, inconspicuous spot.

A small tip: Sometimes furniture has a surface film that does not require any further care products – dusting is enough.

What is the current condition of your furniture? Does the wood still look good, or are there already dull, dry spots? This greatly influences the choice of care products.

Looking forward to your feedback!

This is a very important point that I would also like to emphasize. Often, IKEA furniture already comes with a clear protective coating (usually some type of acrylic or polyurethane varnish) that seals the wood. This is often the case with HEMNES to preserve the wood’s light color and protect it from moisture. In such cases, it’s better to avoid oil- or wax-based care products, as they can damage the finish or lead to uneven results.

This mainly applies to untreated or oiled wood—in the case of HEMNES, only if you have refinished the piece yourself.

For sustainable care of lacquered HEMNES furniture, I therefore recommend:
- Regular dusting with a soft cloth.
- Wiping with a damp cloth using diluted mild soap, followed by immediate drying.
- If using wax or oil care products, apply very sparingly and preferably only with products specifically designed for lacquered surfaces.

If anyone knows of products explicitly developed for lacquered pine wood with sustainable formulations, I would also be interested in recommendations.

Best regards!
