Hello everyone,

I am currently upgrading my Ikea Platsa shelving unit and am wondering if there is any special accessory available to retrofit the Platsa doors. Specifically, I want to know if it is possible to use additional or alternative door fittings, hinges, or handles outside of the Ikea range to make the system more customizable or functional. For example, I am considering adding soft-close mechanisms or installing more specialized handles without completely changing the basic system.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations regarding accessories that can be added to Platsa doors afterward? Which products or solutions are compatible or recommended? Are there any limitations to keep in mind?

Thanks in advance for your tips and advice!

Hey, great project! I once tried adding some soft-close functionality to my Platsa doors. Ikea doesn’t officially offer this, but there are universal soft-close dampers that are fairly easy to install—they fit standard hinges or can be mounted near the hinges.

It sounds like a little DIY adventure, but with some patience, it works quite well. You can also swap the handles easily by adjusting the holes, since Platsa doors use standard door material.

Just be sure to stick to the exact measurements! It’s not too complicated, but definitely more enjoyable when you know exactly what you want 😉

Basically, the Ikea Platsa system is quite modular, but the original accessories usually focus on the standard hinges and handles included in the package or sold separately.

For retrofitting soft-close mechanisms, I recommend first checking the door type and hinge carefully: Platsa uses concealed 35 mm (1.4 inch) cup hinges.

There are hardware brands like Blum or Hettich that offer compatible soft-close hinge solutions, but installation requires precision since the drilling dimensions and door thickness can vary. Also, the clearance to the cabinet frame is important.

- Tip 1: Measure and document the existing drill holes.
- Tip 2: Soft-close inserts that clip onto the original cup hinges sometimes work without major modifications.
- Tip 3: Alternative handles usually require adjusting the drill holes.

Before ordering anything: how are the doors constructed exactly (particleboard, thickness, surface finish)? Are you planning to replace the doors entirely or only upgrade the hardware?

This information helps to provide more targeted advice.

Additionally, it should be noted that Ikea usually ships Platsa doors without soft-close hinges, and the compatible fittings cannot be retrofitted separately by Ikea. This means that soft-close functionality often requires aftermarket dampers from third-party suppliers.

These dampers are typically installed on the cabinet body or within the hinge area and require good installation skills, especially due to the limited space and the way they operate within the hinge assembly.

Standard handle replacement is unproblematic; however, new handles should match the existing drill holes or be adapted accordingly.

In short: There are no official Ikea accessories for retrofitting Platsa doors, but with technically compatible third-party components, the function can be partially extended—though this demands a certain level of craftsmanship and precise measurements.
