Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an Ikea Besta shelving unit, but currently I don’t have any of the original screws that are usually provided for the assembly. Therefore, I would like to know if there is a reliable guide or alternative methods to safely and securely build the Ikea Besta shelving unit without using the supplied screws. Specifically, I am interested in whether it is possible to use other commonly available fasteners that offer the same strength and durability, or if there are tips and tricks on connecting the shelving components differently without compromising stability. I would appreciate any suggestions based on proven solutions or personal experiences.

Hello lusinon,

I completely understand that you need a quick solution. Fundamentally, the Ikea Besta system is designed to be assembled using cam locks and dowels.

As a temporary alternative, you can try using high-quality chipboard screws with suitable wall plugs that are at least the same length and diameter as the originals. Please make sure that the screws are not too short or too thin, as this would make the connection unstable.

Another option is to use furniture connector brackets (metal angles) in places where it is mechanically feasible to increase stability.

Please keep in mind that these solutions are intended as temporary fixes. You should replace the fasteners with the original parts as soon as you receive them to ensure long-term safety.

If you like, I can provide you with a list of screw and wall plug sizes that fit well.

The background in my case is that I want to finish the shelf as quickly as possible, and the original screws will only be reordered and delivered in a few days.

From a technical perspective, sarlo’s approach makes the most sense: temporarily use standard chipboard screws and appropriate anchors to maintain stability. With flat-pack furniture, it is important not to use just any screw but to consider load capacity and material compatibility.

Also, make sure to tighten all connections properly, as some common screws require more care when driving them in than cam screws to avoid damaging the chipboard panels.

In short: There is no official instruction for assembly without the original screws, but with proper preparation, suitable replacement screws can be used effectively until the original parts arrive.

Replacement with regular screws is possible, but it increases the risk that the piece of furniture will not achieve the same stability.

I completely agree with that. Cam screws serve two purposes: they secure the joint and ensure stable edge bonding. Replacing them with regular screws is only conditionally recommended and should be considered a temporary solution.

It is best to carefully document which connection is replaced and how, to avoid reusing drill holes multiple times during later retrofitting, which could unnecessarily weaken the material.

Conclusion: Liability and safety come first. If it is not urgent, it is better to wait for the original parts.
