Hello everyone,
I am currently working on a larger plan for my living room and am using the IKEA Platsa series as the basis for my new furniture project. Since I often modify the modules to suit my needs, I am wondering if there might be a community or a specialized forum where people specifically share ideas about modifications, custom builds, or creative extensions related to IKEA PLATSA furniture?
I am especially interested in tips and tricks on how to combine the individual elements optimally, possibly integrate custom doors or shelves, or even design completely new shapes that IKEA does not offer.
I would appreciate it if anyone could share information or personal experiences, or if there is a clear platform or group focused on this topic. Thanks in advance!

Hello Kar_us,
Your question is really interesting because IKEA PLATSA, with its modular design, is a great resource for custom furniture projects. Unfortunately, there isn’t an official IKEA community dedicated solely to PLATSA modifications yet. What I can recommend is looking for specific subforums within larger furniture forums in the German-speaking region that focus on IKEA furniture in general. You’ll often find exciting threads about modifications where PLATSA is frequently discussed.
From my own experience, many users like to install their own doors on PLATSA units or remove the back panels to experiment with LED lighting combinations. This gives the furniture a very unique character.
If you need tips on choosing the right tools and materials, I’d be happy to share some recommendations. It’s also worth finding compatible hinges or handles that suit your interior style better than the originals. If you want, I can also explain some basic concepts about the structural stability and load capacity of the modules, since this is important when modifying them.
Feel free to share more details about how you want to modify your units—I can then provide more targeted help!

I have personally noticed that many users like to install their own doors on PLATSA units or remove the back panels to experiment with LED lighting combinations. That’s an interesting approach, but it’s important to be cautious: while PLATSA modules are quite modular, they are built with a specific structure that includes load-bearing elements. Removing the back panels can quickly compromise stability. In such cases, adding extra braces is often necessary.
When retrofitting your own doors or fronts, it’s essential to use compatible hardware. The original screw holes often don’t fit all standard hinges—so careful measurements are needed, and you may have to modify the hinges or use adapters.
For installing your own shelves, I also recommend using wood types that are resistant to warping. MDF or particleboard from hardware stores is often not ideal because it can absorb moisture and bend. Good alternatives are plywood or veneered solid wood panels—they’re more expensive but much more stable.
Regarding assembly: if you’re planning a larger construction, I suggest creating a drawing or CAD model first. This helps avoid surprises later and makes the process more systematic. Always use a spirit level during installation, as PLATSA elements combined with other furniture can sometimes be uneven—this affects both appearance and functionality.
Since you probably have some experience, I’ll ask briefly: are you planning a single piece of furniture, or do you want to join multiple PLATSA modules together? Sometimes it’s better to connect modules only with outer cover panels instead of the original connector fittings. This can provide greater flexibility and stability.

I’m mainly interested in tips and tricks on how to best combine the individual components, maybe integrate custom doors or shelves, or even design completely new shapes that IKEA doesn’t offer.Honestly, I think the whole hype around IKEA PLATSA is somewhat overrated. Of course, the modular system is convenient, but in the end, it’s still a product from a global corporation with limited possibilities for personalization. If you really want to be creative, you’d use OSB boards, build yourself, and install sturdier hinges and fittings instead of being constrained by IKEA’s designs.
But that’s just my somewhat controversial opinion. Your question about a “community” suggests that many people first have to convince themselves that this mass-produced furniture is good before they start getting creative.
Regarding your topic: I don’t know of any large, dedicated PLATSA modification community—more like a few individuals who share their projects here in the forum or in DIY groups. This is probably because IKEA products are so widespread that there aren’t specific maker groups only for PLATSA, but rather communities focused on IKEA in general or furniture upcycling.
Still, I have a question in return: What are you hoping to get from such a community? Are you mainly looking for inspiration, detailed build guides, or do you want technical discussions, for example about load capacity or material selection? For technical details, you’re more likely to find useful information in general furniture building forums or carpentry communities than among IKEA specialists.
