ᐅ Is a Satellite System Still Necessary for New Builds, or Is IPTV Sufficient?

Hello everyone,

Please forgive me if I haven’t searched through hundreds of pages. My basic question is whether you still consider a satellite dish necessary or if you would just skip it altogether. About our profile: When we watch TV, it’s exclusively public broadcasting channels and no private channels. However, mostly we watch on-demand content like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and so on. In this context, we’re really starting to doubt whether we can save ourselves the 850 EUR gross. What do you think? Should we just stream the public broadcasting channels via Apple TV, or is it still better to have a satellite dish installed?

Thanks & good luck, Commanderchen

Not necessarily, you can also install the provider's IPTV app on Android TVs.

Whether satellite, IPTV, cable, or antenna.
Logitech Harmony controls everything.
I use it to operate the Magenta receiver, TV, Yamaha receiver, and the LED strips behind the TV and sideboard.
Individually or multiple devices simultaneously through scenes, programmed according to my preferences.

Is that a DIY solution, or is it available ready-made for purchase?

To clarify, can I, for example, buy a Panasonic TV and simply install the app for Telekom Magenta or Deutsche Glasfaser, and will everything work smoothly, or is it likely to be more complicated?

Swisscom generally does not have the best network. There have been several issues in recent weeks and months even before the coronavirus situation. The backbone is reportedly not beyond question, based on what is being said.

Other Swiss providers like Salt or Init7 do not complain about that.

I only have experience with 1&1 TV, and there the app is already available for TVs with Android operating systems (for example, newer Samsung models). It should also work with the Magenta app.

It depends on what you mean by IPTV. Services like Zattoo, Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ are supported by any "modern" TV, and if not, a Fire TV Stick or similar device can be used.
For Sky, I think you needed a set-top box, but I believe it can now also be managed via the home network...
