Hello everyone,

In my bathroom, black tiles with a slate look are going to be installed on the floor (size 30 x 60cm (12 x 24 inches)).

My tiler and the advisor at the tile studio strongly recommend a staggered layout, either half-bond or one-third bond. Would you also recommend this? I tend to prefer a "straight" installation (not staggered). Is there a risk that the tiles might not line up perfectly side by side with this method?

Many thanks in advance for your opinions!

Hi,

I lean towards either standard laying or a 1/3 offset pattern.

Reasoning:
Tiles are usually slightly convex, meaning they tend to bow outward (the center of the tile is higher when placed on the floor than the corners). If you use a half-bond (staggered) pattern, the lowest points of the tiles (the corners) align with the highest point (the center) of the adjacent tiles, creating noticeable edges. With a 1/3 offset, this effect is somewhat reduced, resulting in minimal edges that my clients generally find acceptable. With standard laying (aligned joints), you avoid edges, but because of the lower corners and bowed center, you get a roughly uneven or wavy floor surface.

Please decide which option suits you best.

Regards, Dirk
