Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the right subforum. Since it’s broadly about surface finishes, I thought it might fit here.

We have a quote for covering our staircase. The staircase is cast, and we want to cover it with natural stone. The staircase turns a corner.
Now we have to decide whether to set the treads and risers in a "folded structure" (Faltwerk) or to have the tread slightly overhang.
The straight treads would be 25cm (10 inches) in the folded structure and just under 27cm (11 inches) if overhanging. Naturally, the inner corner is smaller.
My wife has a bit of a fear of heights, and potential visitors for the upper floor tend to be older.

My question is, based on your experience, how much difference do those 2cm (1 inch) make in terms of feeling safe when using the stairs?
The folded structure definitely looks nicer, but… there’s some uncertainty.
Can anyone provide an estimate?

Just imagine how much contact area your shoe has on 25cm (10 inches). And then when you walk down the stairs. We have a spiral staircase, and when I’m in a hurry, I walk on the inner part where 10cm (4 inches) is enough.

In front of the house, however, I fully use 32cm (13 inches) because that’s often where groceries or a stroller are carried.
