Hello everyone, my name is Hendrik. I recently purchased a kitchen from IKEA and assembled it myself. Everything went really well (except for accidentally drilling into the high-voltage cable—oops!), but I’m currently struggling a bit with the extractor hood. The Utdrag isn’t exactly a luxury model, but I thought it was a good compromise between appearance and price.
I want to operate it as an exhaust system, so the duct leads outside. Now, here’s my problem: the hood makes a noise like a jet engine starting up, but it doesn’t extract anything at all. If I remove the duct on top, there is a strong airflow there, of course pushing air out—that’s how it should be. But at the bottom, it really doesn’t extract anything. You can observe this well when boiling water; the steam rises, then moves sideways and upward in front of the overhead cabinet. At the front right, it even blows slightly, directing the steam toward the nearest window pane. The airflow going upwards is completely dry, so it isn’t coming from below. I have it plugged into a standard electrical outlet, which works fine with other appliances.
To test, I also connected the supplied carbon filters for recirculation mode and routed the duct out of the cabinet. This did not change the problem—no suction function at all from the hood.
Neither the manual nor the unit itself provide any indication that I need to flip a switch, open a flap, or take any other action to activate suction.
Am I just missing a clue for correct operation, or could the hood simply be defective?
Best regards,
Hendrik

IKEA-Experte17 Jan 2017 16:30Hello,
to my knowledge, there is nothing to adjust there. With my range hood (not a UTDRAG), I once had the problem that it did not ventilate properly because the wall was located just a few centimeters away, and the gap was only covered at the front. After I sealed the gap at the top, it worked well again.
It could end up with you calling customer service, who will say everything is fine, and then you making use of your return policy. Product reviews are available on Ikea.at, ikea.ch, and ikea.fr.
