Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet unit, and recently the doors have started making an annoying squeaking noise. This sound is especially noticeable when opening and closing the cabinet doors, and it really bothers me.

My question is: How can I quickly and effectively fix the squeaky doors of the IKEA Metod cabinet myself, without using complicated tools or expensive replacement parts?

I have done some initial research and suspect that the problem might be with the hinges, but I’m not sure if a simple lubrication will be enough or if I need to replace the hinges entirely.

The goal is to make the doors quiet and smooth, preferably without having to take the cabinet apart. I would really appreciate practical tips that are easy to apply, based on your experience!

Thanks in advance!

To be honest, the problem with squeaky cabinet doors is a classic one that is often “treated” too quickly with some kind of oil or spray instead of addressing the real cause.

Is it possible that the squeaking isn’t just coming from the hinges themselves, but also from incorrect installation or sideways pressure on the door?

I wonder if the constant squeaking is caused because the doors are under tension, which naturally happens after a few months. Lubricating the hinges is a quick fix, but does it really solve the problem in the long run?

I imagine that with Metod, a bit of adjustment (realigning the doors, tightening the hinges) might do more good than lubricants.

What do you think?

Hello everyone,

referring to Sopizar’s question and LIELCHEN’s comment, I would like to share a structured approach that has helped me most effectively with squeaky Metod cabinet doors:

- First, close the door completely and carefully check the hinges: Are any screws loose or is an adjustment missing?
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to slightly tighten the hinges in the three possible positions (top, side, rear). IKEA often uses small adjustment screws for this.
- If the screws are tight, thoroughly clean the hinges before lubricating them, as dust often increases the squeaking.
- The best lubricant is a dry lubricant like silicone spray rather than oil, since oil attracts dirt and makes the movement harder over time.
- Important: Use only a small amount of spray. A brief spray along the moving metal parts is enough.

Additional tip: If the squeaking persists, it can help to briefly remove the door and lightly cushion the hinges with thin Teflon tape or felt pads (for example, furniture pads) to reduce friction.

This is how I have handled several Metod cabinets. It is relatively quick, inexpensive, and requires only minimal tools.

Good luck!

Interesting point. I would even go further: often the cause of such squeaking is viewed too narrowly.

It is quite possible that the Metod hinges, due to their design combined with the door installation, are under slight misload, causing increased pressure at certain contact points. Therefore, simple lubrication may only provide a short-term improvement.

Only through precise adjustment of the hinges can the pressure be distributed evenly, which leads to a lasting reduction in noise.

Of course, this is a bit fiddly and takes some time, but I see it as a more sustainable approach than just reapplying grease – in my experience, that usually only works until the next dust particle gets into the mechanism.

My question to the community: Are there any special adjustment tips for Metod hinges or perhaps alternative replacement parts that tend to produce less noise?

For Metod hinges, IKEA provides clear adjustment options:
- Lateral screw to shift the door sideways
- Vertical screw to raise or lower the door
- Depth screw to adjust the distance from the cabinet edge

Regarding squeaking: lubricate with silicone spray, which is usually sufficient. Replacement parts are generally the same and will squeak if installed incorrectly.

Important: Always tighten the screws firmly; otherwise, the problem won’t improve.
