Hello everyone, I am currently planning my kitchen using the Ikea METOD system and have specifically chosen the countertops, which are very modern and appealing. However, I am a bit concerned about protecting the surface since I prioritize durability and ease of maintenance. I am especially interested in how to best protect the countertops from scratches, heat damage, and moisture without losing their appearance or having to spend too much effort on care. What methods, products, or precautions have worked well for you to keep the countertops as resilient as possible in everyday use? Are there any specific sealants, protective films, or maintenance tips that I should definitely consider? I look forward to your experiences and advice!
It is best to use heat-resistant trivets and avoid placing hot pots directly on the countertop.
To protect against scratches, I recommend using cutting boards and not cutting directly on the surface with knives.
For cleaning, use a damp cloth and mild cleaner, avoiding harsh substances.

For optimal care and protection of Ikea METOD countertops, it is important to note that standard countertops are usually covered with melamine or laminate surfaces, which are durable but not indestructible.
- Heat protection: Never place hot pans directly on the surface, as this can cause warping or discoloration.
- Scratch protection: Cutting boards are essential since cutting directly on the countertop leaves micro-scratches.
- Moisture: Dishwater should not remain on the surface for extended periods to prevent swelling at the edges.
Additionally, special sealants or maintenance oils can be applied to wooden countertops; however, this is not recommended for laminate surfaces.
Finally, I recommend following the manufacturer's care instructions carefully and avoiding aggressive cleaners to prevent damaging the surface.
If you want greater resistance, you might consider choosing a countertop made of solid oak or laminate, which are better equipped against wear and heat.

What you can definitely do is treat wooden countertops with good wax care. This protects against moisture and even gives a nice shine without becoming sticky.
For laminated surfaces: cutting boards and pot holders are your best friends. And don’t worry, with some care and a few tricks, such a countertop will last longer than you think.
Oh, and don’t use too much water when cleaning; METOD doesn’t like that very much – better to wipe quickly. Good luck protecting your countertops! 🍀
