Hello everyone,
I’ve been considering getting a Billy bookcase from IKEA for a while now because I simply need more space for my books. However, I’m wondering how sturdy the bookcase really is, especially if you want to store many heavy books. Can the Billy handle that, or would it be better to choose a different shelf? Also, how easy is it to assemble – can you manage on your own without any problems, or is it much easier with two people? And what about buying additional shelves later on?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences!

The differences in the Billy shelves actually result from several updates in design and material thickness over the years. That is indeed the case. The more recent series use lighter particle boards and, in some cases, more economical material usage, which also affects load capacity and the perceived quality. The stability issue has become very model- and production-batch-dependent, as Ikea frequently adjusts manufacturing details—such as the back panels or the method of securing the shelves.

The basic principle remains unchanged: they are sufficient for typical book loads, as long as the shelf is not overloaded and proper wall mounting and careful assembly are taken seriously. It is noticeable that the shelves tend to bend more quickly under localized, heavy loads compared to older versions. Replacement shelves and accessories are still available, but color variations between old and new production batches cannot be ruled out.

Those who prioritize load capacity or have special furniture requirements will more often need to consider alternatives within the current series. The pricing policy now reflects the level of materials used quite accurately. Billy remains a classic for standard applications, but it is not a heavy-duty shelf.
