Hello everyone, I bought an IKEA Besta basic box and am considering how to turn it into a custom storage solution that fits perfectly in my living room. My main questions are: How can I modify the box effectively to incorporate different inserts such as drawers, doors, or open shelves? I’m also interested in which tools and materials are best suited to make this process as easy and sturdy as possible. Does anyone have experience with adapting BESTA components, maybe even with creative ideas for surface finishes or special fittings? I would appreciate tips on planning, execution, and advice on potential pitfalls in this DIY project!

Has anyone had experience modifying BESTA units, perhaps even with creative ideas for surface design or special fittings?I have completed several projects with Besta and can specifically recommend the following for surfaces: applying a primer to the melamine-coated laminate improves the adhesion of paint or film. For installing drawers or doors, I suggest using the original IKEA hardware, as it fits perfectly and is durable. If you want to create custom inserts, make sure to seal the edges to prevent moisture damage.
As a special advantage: combining LED strips with dimmers behind acrylic fronts creates a high-quality look and allows for flexible lighting moods.
