Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes shelving unit and am now setting it up efficiently. I have a question: How much weight can a single shelf of the Ikea Brimnes unit actually hold before it gets damaged or sags?
I read something about a maximum load per shelf in the product description, but there are no precise details on the maximum weight for the Brimnes model. I am specifically interested in the load capacity in kilograms with an even weight distribution.
Perhaps someone here has experience with this or reliable information from tests or directly from Ikea? I plan to use the shelves for books and some electronic devices, which together would add a considerable load. Thanks in advance!

Do you have any idea if adding a technical reinforcement, such as an extra strip beneath the shelf board, could increase the load capacity?Yes, that is a feasible approach. A horizontal reinforcement, like a sturdy strip or a square timber fixed lengthwise under the shelf board, helps distribute the load more evenly and reduces bending.
Alternatively, metal brackets or braces can be attached at the side wall joints to improve stability. It is important to secure the material properly to prevent shear forces from weakening the structure.
With these measures, the effective load capacity can be increased to around 25–30 kg (55–66 lbs), but it is still advisable not to exceed this too much, as MDF material can suffer long-term damage from overloading.
I had loaded my Brimnes shelf with about 12 kg (26 lbs) of books per shelf and did not notice any warping.
The shelf has now been in use like this for about 2 years, and the shelves are still stable. I would consider the 15 kg (33 lbs) maximum weight suggested by Paxton38 to be realistic.

I would consider 15 kg (33 lbs) as a realistic maximum weight according to Paxton38.This matches my observations.
However, I want to emphasize again that it depends on the distribution: a board loaded with very heavy books at a single point is more likely to be damaged than if the weight is spread across the entire surface.
Still, I stick to my recommendation: it’s better to reinforce slightly under the shelf to ensure safety.
In summary: The load capacity of an Ikea Brimnes shelf is approximately 15 kg (33 lbs) evenly distributed.
If you want to store heavier items, you should reinforce it, either with additional wooden battens or metal brackets.
Regularly checking the connection points of the shelf is also advisable to ensure long-term stability.
