I am currently planning to buy an Ikea Pax wardrobe system and have an important question where I’m hoping to get your experience and opinions: How much weight can an Ikea Pax wardrobe realistically hold without compromising the stability or damaging the shelves?
I’m not just referring to the theoretical maximum weight stated in the product description, but more about how it performs in everyday use, especially when storing heavy clothing, shoeboxes, or even books.
It would also be interesting to know if there are differences between the various models or sizes of the Pax system, and whether additional reinforcements are advisable.
Looking forward to your answers and tips!

How much weight can an Ikea PAX shelving unit realistically hold without compromising stability or damaging the shelves?I ordered a PAX last year, and to be honest, I'm sometimes unsure how much weight I can actually put on it. My unit is located in the storage room and holds some heavy boxes with electronics, as well as a few pairs of shoes and winter jackets. I’ve never really overloaded it, but based on experience, I would recommend no more than 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs) per shelf, otherwise the wood starts to bend.
Whether that’s enough for your purpose obviously depends on what exactly you plan to store. I haven’t added any reinforcements, but for heavy items, that might definitely be something to consider.
To answer the question specifically: Ikea generally specifies a load capacity of about 25 kg (55 lbs) per individual shelf board for the PAX elements, provided the shelf is correctly and fully assembled. This is a guideline under normal conditions.
Regarding stability:
- The outer frame is fairly stable but should always be secured to the wall to ensure tipping resistance.
- Different widths (50 cm (20 inches), 75 cm (30 inches), 100 cm (39 inches)) and heights can affect the load capacity of the individual shelves.
If you plan to store particularly heavy items, I recommend using additional wall anchors and, if necessary, reinforcement strips underneath the shelves. Using stronger shelves may also be possible depending on the model.
This ensures optimal load-bearing capacity and prevents sagging.

I’m curious if anyone here has experience with overloading these shelves? Specifically: How does the material respond when intentionally loaded beyond the recommended limit? Does it break immediately, or does it first show a noticeable bending?
I have a PAX shelving unit at home that I filled with books a few years ago (approximately 20-22 kg per shelf) (44-48 lbs). Since then, the shelves have not shown any significant sagging, but this also depends on the width of the shelf and how evenly the load is distributed.
- Wall mounting is mandatory.
- With very heavy loads, the unit may deteriorate over time.
- For very high loads, I recommend stronger shelves or additional reinforcements.
Ikea’s official specifications are realistic if followed correctly.
