Hello everyone,
about five years ago, I bought a Kallax shelf unit from Ikea and have been using it extensively since then. Now I am wondering: how durable is the Kallax really after five years? I am interested in whether material fatigue, joint wear, or visible damage have become noticeable, and how well it actually withstands the stresses of everyday use in living spaces. What experiences have you had after longer periods of use? Do the colors or surfaces become rougher, or is there any warping? I am also curious whether there is a significant difference in quality compared to similar shelving systems when used intensively.
I would appreciate detailed, specific responses and personal reports to better assess the long-term durability of the Kallax shelf unit in daily life. Thank you in advance for your opinions!

Regarding the durability of the Kallax after 5 years, the following can be said:
The shelving unit is made from coated particleboard with a melamine resin surface, which is generally durable and easy to maintain. Long-term stress may occasionally cause minor edge chipping or warping of the back panel, especially when the shelves are heavily loaded for extended periods or exposed to moisture. The connections are made with dowels and screws, which makes the shelf relatively stable if handled carefully. Color changes are unlikely as long as prolonged direct sunlight exposure is avoided.
With regular use and loads in a residential environment, the Kallax meets most requirements but is not designed for very heavy loads or industrial use.

And what about children or pets? Do they cause increased wear and tear?

Sinan-meo16 Nov 2022 09:34The issue of chipped edges is quite relevant. With heavy use, for example frequent rearranging or if the shelving unit is not perfectly level, the edges can become damaged over time. However, this is rather uncommon with normal residential use.
Regarding pets and children: In my experience, Kallax shelves are more resistant to scratches and minor impacts than expected. The melamine-coated surface is quite durable, but it depends on the intensity of use – cat claws or playing children can leave visible marks, but these don’t cause serious damage to the core material.
Proper assembly and avoiding exposure to moisture are also important for durability – the latter can cause particle boards to swell, which compromises stability.

Proper installation and avoiding exposure to moisture are also important for durability. The risk posed by moisture is often underestimated. Do you have examples of how moisture specifically damages or alters the furniture? Especially if someone uses the Kallax in a bathroom or kitchen area, this could be a crucial factor.
Could the shelf realistically last longer than 5 years under such conditions, or would it be better to choose a different solution? I believe the contextual factors are essential for a realistic assessment of durability.
