Hello everyone, I am interested in Ikea Brimnes dressers and would like to know how much weight these pieces of furniture can actually support. Specifically, I am wondering if the dressers with multiple drawers are suitable for everyday use in a bedroom, especially if I store heavier clothing items in the drawers or occasionally place small household appliances on top. Are there any experience-based figures regarding the maximum load capacity per drawer or the overall stability when the dresser is loaded with around 70-80 kg (154-176 lbs)? Additionally, I am curious if the load capacity can be improved through any modifications (e.g., additional reinforcements), or if the material and construction are fundamentally limited.
The Ikea Brimnes dressers are sturdy enough for regular household use. A load of about 10 to 15 kg (22 to 33 lbs) per drawer is realistic. A total load of 70-80 kg (154 to 176 lbs) is near the limit for the frame, especially if the weight is not evenly distributed. Modifications are usually unnecessary, as the dresser is not designed for significantly increased loads.
Hello Lis42, your question is very relevant for the proper use of furniture items like the Brimnes chest of drawers. Basically, Ikea has not officially published weight limits for the drawers in the Brimnes series, but the construction is based on typical MDF and particleboard materials, combined with simple sliding rails. A single drawer is usually designed to hold about 12-15 kg (26-33 lbs), which is already limited by the quality of the rollers and slides.
If you plan to store heavy clothing or equipment frequently, you should keep the following points in mind:
- Fill drawers evenly to avoid localized overloading
- Do not place standing weights on the drawer fronts or carcass, as this can create leverage forces
- Top surfaces are the most stable, but even here 20-30 kg (44-66 lbs) is usually the maximum for continuous use
If you need a long-term solution for heavier loads, you could replace the drawer slides with stronger rollers and add additional cross braces to the frame. However, this involves some effort, and Ikea chests of drawers are not designed for industrial-level loads.
I’m also curious: will you be using the chest of drawers in a child’s room, a bedroom, or possibly as a TV stand? Depending on that, the load and points of concern may vary.

In summary, the Ikea Brimnes dressers are generally stable enough for typical household use. Their construction from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard with a melamine finish provides moderate load-bearing capacity.
- The load capacity per drawer usually ranges between 12 and 15 kilograms (26 to 33 pounds), depending on the model and condition.
- For even and safe use, weight should be distributed evenly.
- Ikea does not specify the maximum total load capacity for the entire unit, but a continuous load of 70 to 80 kilograms (154 to 176 pounds) for a dresser with 4 to 5 drawers is not recommended.
It is technically possible to increase the load capacity, but this is not intended by Ikea and could void the warranty. Reinforcing the frame or replacing the drawer slides may improve load capacity at home, but care should be taken not to impair drawer functionality.
If you need to store heavy items, I recommend considering alternative models with solid wood or metal frames.

I’ve had the Brimnes dresser in my living room as a TV stand for almost two years now. It works perfectly! 💪 The drawers hold up well—I store DVDs, gaming accessories, and all kinds of small items in them. The weight is obviously distributed, and the top surface easily supports my 40 kg (88 lbs) TV without any issues. Still, I made a point of not overloading the dresser. So I can definitely confirm that the Brimnes is really sturdy for everyday use!
Motivation: The dresser is a great solution—you just shouldn’t put too much weight on individual drawers and should distribute the load reasonably.
