FikauI would like to start a discussion on the topic: How can the assembly of Ikea Hemnes desks be done efficiently?
I have purchased the desk and generally find the instructions understandable, but some steps seem inefficient or unclear. It is especially important for me to minimize the assembly time without compromising stability, and to know which tools or aids are truly necessary, as I do not own a cordless drill, for example. Perhaps someone also has tips for an effective workflow or the order of work steps to avoid mistakes.
I’m also interested in whether it is worth modifying the pre-drilled holes or if the fit is generally accurate. Are there any special tricks to make attaching the back panel or the drawers easier? I look forward to practical experiences, preferably with notes on common difficulties and solutions.

Without a cordless drill, I prefer to use a Phillips screwdriver with a good grip.
The back panel should be installed last – it significantly stabilizes the table.
And yes, the holes are usually pre-drilled well; reworking is rarely necessary.

The assembly of the Hemnes desk should be done systematically to work efficiently and avoid mistakes. I recommend the following steps:
- First, unpack all parts and check that everything listed in the instructions is present. It can be helpful to label or number the components briefly.
- Next, connect the tabletop to the side panels. It’s useful to screw in the fasteners loosely at first and only tighten them fully during the final assembly. This allows flexibility when aligning the parts.
- For the back panel, I recommend securing it close to the load points and evenly to avoid any tension.
- Drawers are best assembled individually, carefully adjusting the runners—distortion often occurs here.
Tools: A screwdriver with a good grip is often sufficient, but using a cordless drill and Allen keys can simplify the process.
Even small details, like carefully aligning the dowels before inserting them, help prevent damage to the material.
In conclusion: The assembly manual is solid, but it’s important to follow the sequence of steps and take your time fitting the pieces instead of forcing them together.

Which specific parts are causing you problems?Thank you for the detailed answer. For me, the drawers are particularly challenging; they often stick, and I can't get the slides perfectly aligned. The back panel also worries me because it tends to warp slightly when screwed in.
Additionally, I wonder if it’s better to pre-drill the screws, as the holes sometimes seem a bit off, causing the material to split slightly. I’m also interested in any special tips for safely assembling furniture as a beginner, to avoid ending up with wobbly or uneven results.
Problems with drawers usually stem from inaccurate alignment of the drawer slides. My tips:
- Fully install the drawer slides beforehand and check if they run parallel.
- Use a rubber mallet or a soft piece of wood for gentle adjustments.
- Warping of the back panel is often caused by overly tight screwing. First, tighten screws only lightly, then check if everything sits flush, and only then fully tighten.
Pre-drilling is generally not necessary, as IKEA matches the fit and material hardness accordingly. If cracks still occur, this can be due to excessive force or faulty screwdrivers.
For beginners, I recommend a step-by-step plan combined with a calm working approach and reading the instructions thoroughly before starting. Using properly fitting tools is also crucial.

Pre-drilling is usually not necessary because Ikea adjusts the fit and material hardness accordingly.I somewhat doubt this as a general statement. From my experience, especially with Hemnes, which uses quite solid wood, slight pre-drilling can reduce the risk of splitting, particularly if the screw placement is unfavorable or if the screws are too long.
Even though Ikea specifies the hole positions, manufacturing tolerances or inaccurate handling during DIY assembly can cause issues. Objectively, a controlled pre-drill sometimes seems safer, especially for less experienced DIYers.
What has been your experience regarding durability and stability after assembly without pre-drilling? How often do you need to tighten or make adjustments?
