Hello everyone, I am looking for a reliable and detailed guide on how to repair damage to the Malm bed frame from IKEA. Specifically, I am dealing with small dents, scratches, and possibly minor chips in the surface of the wood veneer.

I am particularly interested in which materials and tools are best suited for this type of repair, whether it is better to use filler putty or other products, and if the surface needs to be treated afterward with a special varnish or oil to restore durability and appearance.

I don’t have advanced DIY skills, but I would like to do the repair myself if the effort is manageable. Thanks for your advice!

For minor scratches and dents, I recommend first smoothing the area with fine sandpaper. Then you can apply wood filler or a suitable putty. After it dries, lightly sand the surface again and touch it up with an appropriate acrylic or furniture touch-up pen. This should be enough to visually conceal the damage effectively.

Hello Saunathali,

as WARREN already mentioned, wood filler and sandpaper are a good choice. However, I would recommend using a suitable fine sanding pad to avoid damaging the material, especially since Malm bed frames have a melamine-coated surface.

Just an important note: Make sure that the wood filler is suitable for furniture with a melamine-coated surface, as regular filler products sometimes do not adhere well.

Regarding the surface: If you don’t want to use paint, furniture touch-up pens or wax sticks can help to match the color of the spots. These are easier to apply than paint and usually work better with the surface.

If you decide to do more DIY repairs of this kind later, there are also special repair kits for IKEA furniture that include small paint spots, filler, and sealant – this can make the work easier.

I hope this answers your question a bit more thoroughly. 🙂

Hello Saunathali,

I would divide the process into three steps to ensure a successful repair of the Malm bed frame:

1. Damage Assessment
First, take a close look to determine how deep and large the damages are. For superficial scratches, fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer) is usually sufficient. Chips or larger dents will require filler material.

2. Material Selection and Preparation
Since the Malm bed frame is melamine-coated, you should use special wood filler or polyester filler that adheres well to smooth surfaces. Regular wood filler may slip or fail to bond properly.

3. Repair and Finishing

- Apply the filler evenly with a small spatula and allow it to dry thoroughly (at least 4-6 hours, depending on the product).
- Then gently sand the repaired area until it is smooth.
- Finally, you can touch up the color with a furniture restoration pen (choose a matching shade) to blend the repair.
- If a glossy finish is needed, you can apply a very thin layer of clear acrylic varnish or clear lacquer suitable for furniture.

Common mistakes include applying the filler too thickly, sanding too roughly, and not matching the color precisely, which makes the repair noticeable.

One last tip: Always sand gently with fine sandpaper using light pressure to avoid damaging the surrounding surface.

I hope this helps you with your project 🙂
