Hello everyone, I am looking for reliable methods to repair dented edges on my Billy shelves. These edges have been slightly damaged due to bumps or transport, which looks especially unattractive. Since I have already assembled and used the shelves, I would prefer not to do any major replacement work. It is important for me to get helpful tips on how to make the dents as invisible as possible or at least restore the stability. Does anyone have experience with this kind of repair on BILLY shelves? Are there any special tools or materials you would recommend?

The BILLY shelves are made from particleboard with a melamine or foil coating, which makes edge repairs somewhat delicate. For dents without cracks, I recommend gently smoothing the corner with fine sandpaper if the surface is uneven. Afterwards, a decorative filler or wood putty matched to the color or surface can help restore the profile. Important: Let the filler dry thoroughly before lightly sanding it.

For smaller dents, a thin drop of construction adhesive or clear craft resin can also be used to rebuild and harden the edge. This is more durable than plain filler. For color matching, suitable felt-tip markers or care products from IKEA can be used.

The quickest way is often to carefully warm it with a hairdryer and gently push out the edge using a soft tool. Afterwards, touch it up with a color-matched marker.

I would like to provide a simple step-by-step guide for repairing dented edges on BILLY shelves:

1. Cleaning: Thoroughly dust off and clean the edge (e.g., with alcohol) to remove dirt and grease.
2. Heating: Warm the dented area with a hairdryer to about 40-50°C (104-122°F). This makes the material more flexible.
3. Pushing Out: Gently push the dent out from the inside using a soft, blunt tool (e.g., a kitchen spoon), if the edge is still accessible.
4. Filler: For deeper dents, use fine wood filler or a special repair compound for particleboard. It is important to apply it thinly and smooth it out.
5. Drying: Allow to dry completely, then lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper.
6. Color Matching: Adjust the color with felt-tip markers or furniture touch-up pens.

Common mistakes include being too rough during step 3 or applying filler layers that are too thick, which can lead to cracking.

I agree with this. It is important to ensure that the sanding motion always follows the edge to minimize damage to the surface. Some suppliers offer special repair kits specifically designed for melamine surfaces, which include putty as well as color markers. These are usually visually better than improvised solutions.

Additionally, you should check whether the structural integrity of the edge is still intact. For deeper damage, replacing the damaged component is usually recommended.

Thanks for the very detailed instructions! I have a question: How exactly can the edge be reached from the inside once the shelf is already in place? I can only access it from the outside, and the back is usually just a thin panel that you don’t really want to remove. Does this make the step of pushing the dent out unnecessary, or are there any tricks?
