Hello everyone, I am looking for reliable methods to repair dented edges on my Billy shelves. These edges have been slightly damaged due to bumps or transport, which looks especially unattractive. Since I have already assembled and used the shelves, I would prefer not to do any major replacement work. It is important for me to get helpful tips on how to make the dents as invisible as possible or at least restore the stability. Does anyone have experience with this kind of repair on BILLY shelves? Are there any special tools or materials you would recommend?

How exactly can the edge be reached from the inside once the shelf is already installed?

In many cases, the back panel will actually be the main obstacle, as it blocks access to the actual edge. If the back panel is not removable or is too firmly fixed, the only option is usually to carry out repairs from the outside using filler and paint matching. However, sometimes it is possible to carefully push from the inside with a thin, flexible tool through small openings. Otherwise, heating and filling from the outside is the most practical solution.

I have had good experiences with two-component wood repair fillers. They dry hard and can be sanded and painted like wood. An important tip: apply the material thinly with a small spatula and wait until it is fully cured. After that, you can sand the area cleanly and adjust the color.

If you pay attention to the shape of the edges, the repair will barely be noticeable.

If you don’t have any specialty products, use wood filler from a hardware store, sand it after it dries, and then cover it with a suitable marker. It’s quick to do and usually sufficient for visual purposes.

Additional note to my instructions: If access from the inside is difficult, you can carefully cut or loosen the back panel with a utility knife, provided you are confident with DIY work. Then carry out the repair and carefully reattach the back panel or secure it with thin double-sided tape. Alternatively, the back panel can be removed during the repair process and replaced afterwards.

Important: The back panel is usually only fixed with nails, so some courage and patience are needed.
