Hello everyone,
I am considering turning my Ikea Pax wardrobe into a home office and am looking for practical ideas and tips. My main question is: How can I create a compact, efficient workspace from one or two Pax wardrobes that provides storage for office supplies as well as enough surface area for a laptop and desk accessories?
I am thinking about integrating a pull-out work surface or some kind of fold-down desk, but I wonder how stable such solutions can be and if there are any practical DIY options that make use of the Pax system without requiring major modifications.
Also, I am interested if anyone has experience with lighting inside the wardrobe, since most workspaces benefit from good illumination.
I have about 150 cm (60 inches) of width available and would prefer to avoid extensive alterations to the wardrobe. However, orderliness and functionality are very important to me.
Looking forward to your suggestions.

Since the Pax is very sturdy, you can easily attach a thin particleboard or plywood panel as a desk surface—preferably using brackets.
For lighting, LED strips installed along the upper inside edge work well; they are energy-efficient and provide sufficient light.

One simple way is to remove a drawer front and replace it with a suitable worktop.I can confirm that. It works even better if you use a thin worktop that you can mechanically attach with drawer slides or folding brackets. This way, you can fold the surface up or down as needed, saving space.
LED strip lighting inside the cabinet is highly recommended. Choose a dimmable version so you can adjust the light intensity individually, which is especially more comfortable during long working days.
Also important: use the inside walls of the cabinet for organization systems like hooks or small shelves. This greatly increases functionality, especially with limited space.
Another tip: a small table lamp with a battery or USB connection provides additional, focused light when needed.
When converting a Pax wardrobe into a home office, it is important to carefully check the load-bearing capacity of the worktop used.
Folding brackets must be designed for high load capacity, ideally supporting at least 20-30 kg (44-66 lbs), to ensure safety when used with a laptop and accessories.
In addition, the depth of the workspace should not exceed the standard dimensions of Pax shelves, which are usually 35 or 58 cm (14 or 23 inches). A worktop up to 50 cm (20 inches) deep is practical to maintain ergonomics.
Choosing suitable lighting is also crucial: LED strips with higher brightness (at least 400 lumens per meter) and daylight-like color temperature (around 4000-5000 Kelvin) provide sufficient illumination without flickering or casting shadows on the work surface.
Furthermore, power outlets should be installed nearby or integrated into the cabinet to avoid cable clutter. Using cable management solutions such as cable channels and clips is recommended to keep the wiring organized.
I recommend creating precise sketches and verifying the strength of the materials before remodeling to prevent accidents and damage.
