Hello everyone, I have several IKEA Hemnes shelves in use that I really like overall, but I am having a problem: some of the shelves are quite wobbly, especially when they are taller or when I store heavier items on them.

My question is: how can I stabilize wobbly IKEA Hemnes shelves as effectively and permanently as possible?

I mostly use the standard 2-meter (6.6 feet) high model, with the shelves fully loaded with books and decorations. The back panels are securely fixed, but that does not seem to be enough. I have considered using screws or brackets to increase stability but I don’t want to make any mistakes or spoil the appearance.

Which methods or techniques work best in practice to safely stabilize these shelves without major modifications or expensive tools? Are there any specific IKEA solutions, or does anyone have experience with custom modifications? Tips for anchoring to the wall or floor would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Abbasdra2, your concern about the wobbly Hemnes shelves is completely understandable. The IKEA Hemnes shelves can indeed be prone to movement due to their relatively lightweight construction and sometimes tall design.

First of all, I would make sure that all screw connections are properly tightened. Even slightly loose connections can cause noticeable instability.

A proven method, also recommended by IKEA, is to securely anchor the shelf to the wall using the supplied mounting brackets or holders. This prevents tipping or falling—especially important for tall shelves as a safety measure.

Alternatively or additionally, you might consider the following steps:
- Installing extra corner brackets for reinforcement
- Using cork or felt pads under the shelf feet if the floor is uneven
- Adding diagonal braces at the back if modifiable (rarely possible with Hemnes)

It is always very important to check the wall construction: drywall requires appropriate anchors, while solid walls can be used with screws directly.

In conclusion: with normal household loads and wall anchoring, the stability of the Hemnes shelves is generally satisfactory. However, if you plan to store heavier items frequently, it is worthwhile to combine stabilizing brackets with possibly additional securing to the wall.

I would recommend definitely using the supplied wall brackets and securing the shelf to the wall. This usually reduces wobbling significantly. If the floor is uneven, felt or cork pads under the feet can help.

Good morning, here is a very detailed approach on how you can improve the stability of your Hemnes shelves without significantly affecting their design:

1. Optimize wall attachment:
- Always secure the IKEA wall brackets firmly using appropriate anchors for your wall type (concrete, drywall, brick).
- Tighten the screws again after a few days, as some materials may settle.

2. Check feet and floor contact:
- Uneven floors often cause shelf wobbling. Self-adhesive felt pads or small wooden shims can help.
- Make sure all feet stand solidly on the floor and that the load is not resting solely on two corners.

3. Modular interior setup:
- If possible, place heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones on top to lower the center of gravity.

4. Additional reinforcements:
- Installing metal brackets on the inside at the right and left sides (barely visible from behind) increases lateral stiffness.

5. Inspect the back panel:
- Sometimes the back panels are made of thin material. If you have some DIY skills, you can reinforce them from the inside with thin plywood.

6. Connecting shelves to each other:
- If you have several units standing side by side, connecting them with small screws or slats will stabilize the entire structure.

Finally, a question for you: Are your shelves fully assembled according to the instructions, or have you made any custom modifications to extend or adapt them? Such changes can significantly affect stability.

Absolutely correct. Here is a brief guide for implementation:

- First, identify the wall type to select suitable anchors
- Position the shelf brackets so that the shelf is fixed as much as possible at the top and bottom
- For drywall, cavity anchors or drywall screws often help
- For heavier shelves, always use metal anchors for masonry walls

This is also a very important tip because even a technically stable construction is more prone to tipping if the center of gravity is too high.

Summary for stabilizing Hemnes shelves:
- Always secure shelves to the wall
- Check the floor for levelness and level it if necessary
- Place heavy items at the bottom, lighter ones on top
- Optionally use additional brackets for reinforcement

Some beginners also make the mistake of using no or poor-quality mounting materials – this should be avoided.

I hope this helps!
