Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble my new Ikea Pax wardrobe, but I have a special situation: the walls in my room are drywall (gypsum board). My main concern is securely mounting the wardrobe to this type of wall.

The Pax is quite heavy, and I want to be absolutely sure that it won’t tip over and, most importantly, that the fixings to the drywall will hold.

I’m wondering: which fasteners are best suited here? Are simple wall plugs enough, or should I use special drywall anchors? Are there any recommendations for distributing the load, for example, installing an additional wooden batten behind the paneling?

Also, I’m interested in whether it’s better to secure the wardrobe only to the wall or if I should also consider fixing it to the floor.

I would be very grateful if you could share your experiences on how you securely mounted your Ikea Pax to drywall, which materials and methods have worked well, and what mistakes to avoid.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello Takilis!

Great that you’re approaching the topic so thoroughly! When I installed my Pax on drywall, I can tell you: regular plastic anchors won’t get you far – they don’t really hold well. 😉

I used special heavy-duty anchors for drywall that spread out behind the wall (toggle anchors or hollow wall anchors). They are incredibly strong! Additionally, I secured the cabinet to the wall with a sturdy wooden batten. This helps distribute the load better and makes installation easier.

Tip: If possible, also fix the cabinet to the floor. This adds extra stability, especially if the doors are opened frequently!

Good luck and keep at it, you’ve got this!

I would recommend:
- Using metal hollow wall anchors
- Distributing the load with a wooden batten behind the cabinet
- Floor fixing is optional but advisable for heavy furniture

This will ensure a secure installation.

Hello Takilis,

your question about securely mounting Ikea Pax wardrobes on drywall is very relevant, as the wall construction greatly affects the stability. Gypsum boards alone are not load-bearing enough for heavy furniture, so the fastening method is extremely important.

For a secure installation, it is recommended to first locate the wooden studs behind the drywall (e.g., with a stud finder). You can usually screw directly into the wooden frame there, which is the most stable solution. If the wardrobe position does not align with a stud, use metal cavity anchors with a high load capacity.

The idea of attaching a wooden batten horizontally between the wall and the wardrobe is very helpful: it helps distribute the load more evenly across the wall surface.

An additional floor fixing can be useful, especially if the wardrobe is frequently heavily loaded or located in households with children – this prevents tipping.

Please also make sure to follow the Ikea assembly instructions and do not neglect the wall fastenings, as even sturdy furniture can become dangerous if not properly secured.

I hope this explanation helps you!

I can only agree with that. However, you shouldn’t just blindly use cavity anchors; always check their load capacity carefully.

It is often overlooked that manufacturer specifications for maximum loads apply only under ideal conditions. So, when in doubt, it’s better to use multiple anchors and distribute the load.

This wooden batten makes sense, but keep in mind that with drywall (plasterboard) walls, the connection between the batten and the wall must also be secure—ideally anchored into the studs.

I would also take a closer look at the floor situation. Fixing the unit to the floor isn’t an Ikea-standard approach, but it can greatly increase stability, especially with heavy use.

For the secure installation of Ikea Pax on drywall, the following points are essential:

- Identification of the substructure (wooden or metal studs) behind the drywall using a stud finder
- Preferably attaching the wardrobe directly to these studs to ensure high load-bearing capacity
- Use of approved metal hollow wall anchors (e.g., toggle bolts) with sufficient load capacity if studs are not accessible
- Distribution of the load by means of a horizontal wooden batten behind the Pax, allowing for multiple anchors to be used and avoiding point loads
- Optional floor anchoring can be performed, but it must be checked whether this is structurally reasonable and feasible

In general, installation should follow the manufacturer’s instructions, with careful consideration of the wall structure. Drywall is not suitable for supporting large-area loads without studs.
