Hello everyone,

I am currently having trouble securely fixing my IKEA Metod drawer slides. The drawers are installed, but they wobble occasionally or don’t sit firmly, which isn’t ideal in the long term.

My question is: How can I attach IKEA Metod drawer slides so they remain stable and secure even under heavy use?

So far, I have used the screws provided, but I feel they might be too short or the surface isn’t optimal for them. Do you use longer screws or reinforcement elements?

Additionally, I am interested in any tips for alignment to ensure the drawers run smoothly without wobbling or sticking.

I would really appreciate specific advice and shared experiences, including recommendations for tools and materials.

Thanks in advance!

Use longer screws, at least 4cm (1.5 inches), to ensure better grip in the carcass.

Make sure the guide is properly aligned – it’s best to work with a spirit level.

Pre-drilling is especially important to prevent the wood from splitting.

Hello Lilalau,

I would like to address your question in more detail because the topic of fastening IKEA Metod drawer runners is often underestimated, but it greatly affects functionality and durability.

First of all, it is indeed essential to use the right screws. The ones supplied are often a bit too short because IKEA aims for universal applicability. I recommend screws about 40–45 mm (1.6–1.8 inches) long with a slightly thicker diameter, for example 4 mm (0.16 inches), depending on the wood material of your carcass. This way, you get more thread engagement in the material for a secure fixing.

The material you screw into is also important: MDF or particleboard require longer screws and pilot holes to prevent splitting. But be careful with the pilot hole size: it should not be too large and must be slightly smaller than the screw diameter to ensure the screw gets a good grip.

Regarding alignment: the Metod drawer runners have to be mounted perfectly flat and parallel to the sides of the carcass. Using a spirit level and clamps or a vise to hold the runner in place during installation is helpful here.

A small assembly tip is to fix the runner with only one screw on each side, leaving them loose at first so you can fine-tune the alignment of the runners afterward. Then, all screws can be tightened securely. This prevents misalignment.

Additionally, in areas with high load (e.g., large and heavy drawers), you can add small wooden strips or brackets as reinforcement to increase the screw holding area and provide more stability to the runner.

If you want, let me know what material your carcasses are made of—I can then give you more specific advice.

I hope this helps!

Yeah, I completely agree! For me, the Metod drawer slides only really worked well after I upgraded to slightly longer screws and paid close attention to alignment.

Great tip, that made all the difference! After aligning, tighten everything firmly, and voilà... no more wobbling, the drawers slide smoothly.

And if you ever need to remove the drawer slides: Be very careful with the screws and avoid repeatedly screwing them in and out, or the wood will lose its holding strength.

I’ve experienced that myself, the classic case: wobbling, tightening again, and eventually it was too late.

If you want, you can reinforce the screws with small wooden dowels next to them as a mini-strengthener. It’s not bulky, but it makes things more stable!

Good luck with the screwing – you’ll get it! 😉
