Hello everyone, I have the following problem: I want to secure my IKEA Malm desk and the matching sideboard on a slightly uneven wooden floor because these pieces of furniture otherwise wobble a bit and don’t sit flat. This is especially an issue with the desk, as I would like a stable work surface, and the drawers on the sideboard stick when it is not level.

Does anyone know a good, lasting method to securely fix or level Malm furniture on an uneven floor? For example, I have thought about adjustable furniture glides or shims, but I’m unsure which solution is best without damaging the floor or the furniture. Are there any specific products or techniques you would recommend?

Thanks for your tips!

Hello Bojagla,

There are several relevant options for securing Malm furniture on uneven floors:

1. Use adjustable furniture feet: There are specially designed adjustable furniture legs with threaded inserts that you can screw under the original furniture feet. Turning them allows for fine height adjustment.

2. Plastic or rubber wedges: These are inexpensive and protect the floor. Wedges are suitable if the unevenness is minor.

3. Non-slip pads: In addition to leveling, non-slip pads can help prevent the furniture from sliding.

4. Direct wall mounting: Malm furniture is relatively light. Wall fasteners prevent tipping and secure the furniture.

I recommend a combination of optimal leveling (e.g., with adjustable furniture feet) and wall mounting.

Avoid wooden wedges if you want to protect the floor. Plastic is softer and causes less abrasion.

Best regards

Hello Bojagla,

I’m happy to give you a brief guide on how to securely fix Malm furniture on uneven floors.

Step 1: Check the floor
Measure the height at several points using a spirit level or a short ruler. This way, you’ll know exactly how uneven the floor is.

Step 2: Inspect the furniture feet
Malm furniture usually has fixed feet without adjustment options. However, you can retrofit adjustable feet easily.

Step 3: Install adjustable furniture glides
You can find adjustable threaded glides at hardware stores that can replace the original legs. They typically come in sizes like M8 or M10, which should fit.

Step 4: Add washers or plastic shims
If the glides don’t provide enough height adjustment, you can place plastic shims or special leveling pads underneath.

Step 5: Secure the furniture against tipping
Attach an additional wall fastener to the back. For Malm, there are suitable safety sets from IKEA that can be installed with wall plugs. This ensures the furniture is stable even on uneven floors.

Tip: Avoid wooden wedges, as they can absorb moisture and warp.

I hope this helps you! 🙂

Thank you, Samir, I agree that this makes a lot of sense. Could you please also say if these adjustable furniture feet are really easy to install under Malm furniture?

In hardware stores, you can find adjustable glide screws with threads that you can mount instead of the original legs.

Are these glide screws compatible with the thread of Malm furniture? I had read that Malm usually has simple feet without threads. How do I attach the glide screws then? Do I first need to drill holes or insert screws?

Before I damage anything, I would appreciate specific advice. Also, how difficult is it to install the wall mounting? Thanks!

Hello Bojagla,

I can help you with detailed advice because I recently did this myself.

First: The Malm furniture comes from the factory with fixed legs – meaning they are only glued or screwed on and do not have threads for direct height adjustment. To install adjustable furniture legs, you need to remove the original legs. This usually works without much trouble using a screwdriver and possibly a prying tool, as they are often just plugged in or fixed with one or two screws.

Next, you buy adjustable furniture legs (M8 threads generally fit well). Installation involves pre-drilling a hole in the base of your furniture exactly where the legs were. It is important to drill the holes centered and straight so that the new legs have enough support.

Then you screw in the adjustable legs and adjust them so that the furniture is level – it’s best to check with a small spirit level.

It’s best to clean the floor beforehand so the legs can stand firmly and stably.

Because Malm furniture is relatively light, be sure to use the supplied or separately purchased wall mounting bracket. This prevents tipping and also ensures the furniture stands safely on different floor surfaces.

Oh, and avoid wooden shims because of possible wear or moisture issues. If you need something for leveling, use plastic shims or special furniture leveling pads.

To attach the wall bracket: with a suitable wall plug and screw, this is usually done in less than 20 minutes. It’s important to choose an anchoring point on a load-bearing part of the wall (e.g., solid brick or sufficiently stable plaster) and measure carefully so the furniture sits flush.

Would you like to know exactly which screws and wall plugs I used, or how I organized this in detail?
