Hello community, I would like to replace the drawer handles on my Malm chest of drawers and have a few questions to make this project go as smoothly as possible. Currently, the handles are attached with screws from the back. I am considering replacing the old handles with different ones from a hardware store, which might have slightly different screw lengths or thicknesses.

Therefore, I’m interested in:

1. Do I need to pay attention to specific measurements to avoid having to drill new holes or to ensure the screws fit properly?
2. What is the best way to proceed if the old screws are stuck or difficult to remove?
3. Are there experiences regarding which type of screws IKEA uses (e.g., Phillips, Allen/hex) so I can have the right tools ready?

I look forward to tips, recommendations, and advice on what to watch out for in this simple yet often underestimated DIY step.

You should primarily measure the distance between the screw holes; it must fit the new handle, otherwise it will be difficult.

For stuck screws, lubricating oil or WD-40 can help—let it work for a short time and then carefully loosen the screws.

IKEA usually uses Phillips head screws, so a good Phillips screwdriver is recommended.

Hello karltar,

Your thoughts on changing the handles are well considered. I would like to explain the process in three steps to make your task easier:

1. Preparation: Be sure to accurately measure the hole spacing of your current MALM handles, as IKEA often uses standardized distances for many pieces of furniture, but deviations can occur. Most handles are attached with two screws each.

2. To loosen the screws: As liRaul49 already mentioned, a Phillips screwdriver is usually the tool of choice. If the screws are too tight, apply some WD-40 or a similar lubricant. For very old screws, using a rubber grip can help improve turning.

3. Installing the new handles: If the screw length does not fit, do not force the screws. The dresser front is made of thin wood veneer, and screws that are too long can break through. You may need to obtain suitable screws yourself.

One small tip: Check beforehand whether the new handles align with the center of the existing drill holes. This will greatly simplify installation and prevent new holes that could weaken the furniture.

Good luck with the handle replacement!

I would like to add that IKEA MALM handles are typically attached with screws that are 16 to 25 mm (about 0.6 to 1 inch) long, depending on the drawer depth. This mainly applies to models produced from 2010 onwards. If longer or different screws were used previously, a thorough inspection is strongly recommended.

Regarding tools: Besides a Phillips screwdriver, I recommend using a cordless drill with adjustable torque to carefully loosen the screws without damaging the surfaces or the material.

If you encounter difficulties loosening the screws, especially if they are misaligned or stuck, do not use excessive force, as the wood of the MALM dresser is relatively thin and delicate. The key here is to use a suitable lubricant, allow some waiting time, the right tool, and patience.

As karltar has already mentioned, precise measurement in advance is essential. I also suggest testing the screws on a small, inconspicuous piece of furniture (if available) beforehand to avoid surprises during assembly.
