Hello everyone, I have noticed some minor damages on my remaining BILLY shelf from my last move that I would like to repair myself. Specifically, there are superficial scratches and small chips on the edges, most likely caused during transport or moving. My question is: What simple and effective methods would you recommend for repairing these small damages on BILLY shelves in a way that is as inconspicuous as possible? I am particularly interested in the combination of suitable materials and techniques that result in a durable and visually pleasing finish without having to sand or repaint the entire shelf. Are there specific repair kits, touch-up pens, or household remedies that work especially well? And what should be taken into account to avoid further damaging the surface or changing the typical BILLY look? Thank you in advance for any tips!

Use a white wood repair wax or a matching touch-up marker for the color. This allows you to easily fill and conceal scratches and small chips. Afterwards, gently smooth with a very fine sanding pad. Important: Do not apply too much, as it will look unnatural.

For repairing minor damages on BILLY shelves, I recommend the following steps: First, lightly dust and clean the area to ensure no dirt interferes with the repair process. For scratches or small chips, use a wood repair wax in a matching color that is easy to shape. After it dries, gently sand the area with very fine sandpaper (grit 240 or higher) so that the repaired spot blends as closely as possible with the surrounding surface.

Alternatively, color-matched touch-up pens or markers designed specifically for laminate or veneered surfaces can be used. Especially with BILLY shelves, which are usually made of melamine resin-coated particleboard, it is important not to sand too aggressively to avoid damaging the laminate layer.

A common home remedy sometimes mentioned is using walnuts, whose natural oils can visually reduce minor scratches; however, this method does not provide a permanent repair but rather a cosmetic improvement.

It should generally be noted that minor touch-ups in high-traffic areas may not last forever and are not comparable to refinishing or replacing the surface.

That’s already a really good tip. I’d like to add that you can gently rub the repaired area with a soft cloth and a little tea tree oil or furniture oil afterward. This brings back a bit of shine and helps soften the “freshly fixed” look.

However, if you have small dents on a BILLY shelf, that’s a bit of nostalgia, right? 😉 Even if it doesn’t look perfect, sometimes those little signs of wear are what make furniture especially charming. Still, to keep the shelf looking nice, repairing it is definitely a good idea.

A little tip from me: edges often get quite rough spots, and small patches of wood filler can work wonders to fill those in. Then just paint over or use a touch-up pen, and the damage almost disappears. Good luck!
