Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an Ikea Metod laminate countertop, which unfortunately already has some fine scratches, probably caused by sharp kitchen knives or other utensils. I would like to gently and permanently remove the scratches or at least significantly reduce their appearance.

The countertop has a melamine resin-coated surface, so I’m concerned that aggressive products or incorrect techniques could cause further damage to the material.

Does anyone have experience with repairing or refreshing this type of surface? Which products or methods are recommended for treating scratches without damaging the appearance or protective layer?

Tips on home remedies, specialized repair kits, or professional products suitable for Ikea Metod countertops would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any helpful advice and shared experiences!

This is exactly the core issue I find interesting about this question. With melamine-coated boards like those from Ikea Metod, the surface material inherently does not allow for deep repairs. The coating is relatively thin, so usually only surface-level touch-ups are possible.

It is also important to distinguish between different types of scratches: Are the scratches really only superficial, meaning just in the clear coat or melamine film, or have they penetrated deeper into the substrate material (particleboard or MDF)?

If the damage is deeper, achieving a truly “invisible” repair becomes nearly impossible. Often, you have to work with fillers or cover-up products, without the surface becoming completely smooth again.

Furthermore, I find it questionable who can guarantee the long-term durability of such repairs. Some repair kits promise a lot but in the end are more of a cosmetic fix that can wear off again with moisture or friction.

So the question is: How deep are the scratches, and have you already tried any products or methods? This information is important to provide more targeted advice.

In addition to the previous explanations, I would like to suggest a structured repair workflow that often delivers good results for Ikea Metod laminate countertops:

- First, thoroughly clean the surface, ideally with some mild dish soap and a soft cloth to remove grease and dirt.
- Then inspect the scratches closely: deep scratches should be gently sanded using very fine sandpaper (grit around 600–800) to slightly smooth the edges.
- Next, wipe away the fine dust and apply a repair pen or wax specifically designed for laminate to the scratches. These products are usually available in color-matched shades (wood or neutral tones).
- After drying, a thin layer of furniture or plastic polish (not wax polish) can be applied to even out the shine.

Common mistakes:
- Using sandpaper that is too coarse, which permanently damages the surface
- Inadequate cleaning before repair
- Using solvents that can damage the coating

Of course, this does not replace a new countertop but can significantly improve the appearance. I recommend using some patience and working carefully.

If desired, I can also provide brand recommendations based on my personal experience.

I recently repaired scratches on my Metod panel using a color-matched furniture touch-up marker from the hardware store. Then I carefully polished it with a microfiber cloth – the result was satisfactory, especially for smaller scratches.

Exactly, that is very important. For very small scratches, a mixture of olive oil and lemon juice often helps, gently applied with a soft cloth. This not only nourishes the surface but also masks minor signs of wear.

For deeper scratches, repair wax is indeed the better option, but be sure to choose the right color. The wax is activated by heat – so carefully warm the spot with a hairdryer and then smooth it out to ensure good adhesion.

I would add that when choosing polish, avoid products containing aggressive solvents, as they can damage the melamine coating.

Best regards and good luck with the repair!

Thanks for your input so far!

Most of the scratches are actually quite superficial; a few are a bit deeper but don’t go all the way through the laminate. So far, I have only tried mild cleaning and nothing else.

@Liduta, I would appreciate it if you could suggest some specific repair pens or wax products.

I’m also interested to know whether home remedies like oil solutions or vinegar treatments can produce lasting improvements, or if they tend to be only temporary.

If anyone has tips on preventing scratches on the surface, I’d be happy to hear them.

Thanks in advance to everyone!
