Good morning everyone, I noticed that the drawer slides on my MALM chest of drawers from IKEA are catching in several places and often jam when pulling the drawers out. I observed that some of the plastic parts on the rollers are broken, and the metal tracks no longer seem to engage properly.

My question is: What is the best way to repair the defective MALM drawer slides myself? Are there proven methods or replacement parts I can use without having to replace the entire drawer or the whole chest of drawers? I would like to know which steps are effective to restore the drawers’ functionality and which tools I should use for this.

The rollers can usually be replaced without unscrewing the entire track. Fully extend the drawer, then carefully remove the faulty roller by applying slight pressure or leverage. Simply snap the new roller into place until it clicks. It is important not to overstretch or misalign the track. The rollers are designed to be snapped on.

Do you have to completely unscrew the drawer slides to replace the individual rollers?

This is usually not necessary. The rollers are clip-on and can be removed and reattached individually. Complete removal may only be useful in cases of severe damage or if the slide is loose.

if anyone knows a specific guide on the best way to attach the new rollers

The rollers are usually attached by simply snapping them onto the plastic hooks of the guide rail. To remove them, you can use a flat-head screwdriver, carefully inserting it to gently pry the roller off. Be careful not to cause any breakage. Then replace the roller and check that it moves smoothly and freely. IKEA also provides PDF service manuals online for many models, which illustrate these steps.

Hey, one more tip from me: If you notice the guide rail wobbling when changing the rollers, it's best to tighten the guide screws! This ensures stability. Don’t forget to apply silicone spray afterward, it makes the drawers move smoothly again 🙂

Just to add – if the rollers are no longer available and replacements cannot be found: similar plastic rollers from a hardware store can also be used, which fit on an 8 mm (5/16 inch) axle. However, the measurements must be checked carefully, otherwise they won’t fit.

That might work, but I would advise against using non-original parts. The sliding and running mechanism is precisely calibrated. Replacement parts from IKEA are affordable and ensure a longer lifespan for the drawers.
