Hello everyone, I have a rather specific issue and would like to hear your experiences and tips: How can I best protect my Billy shelves from IKEA against extreme temperature fluctuations?
I have my shelves placed in a room that gets very cold in winter, close to 5°C (41°F), but can also reach over 28°C (82°F) in summer, sometimes changing quickly due to window ventilation. I am concerned about the stability and possible deformation of the material, as wood-based panels are known to react to moisture and temperature.
Are there proven methods to minimize the effects of these fluctuations? Whether it’s applying protective coatings, special placements, or accessories to preserve the wood?
I would really appreciate any tips from you, especially if someone has dealt with this issue practically before. Thank you!

Protect wood from moisture, allow air circulation, and avoid direct sunlight exposure.Exactly, even though it sounds so simple, these facts are essential. I’d like to add that you shouldn’t stress too much if small cracks appear – wood is a living material and needs a bit of room to move. 😉

Hey, great topic! From experience, a little maintenance keeps your Billy shelves in excellent condition. My number one rule is to keep enough distance from windows or heaters. Then, apply some furniture wax once a year. It’s amazing how it protects the surface! 👍
And don’t worry about small dents – they add character! 😄

And then regularly apply some furniture wax once a year. That’s a really good tip!
As an addition: Before applying the wax, you should thoroughly clean the surface from dust and grease. This allows the wax to penetrate the pores effectively and prolongs the protection. If you have concerns about chemical ingredients, there are also eco-friendly, natural waxes available.
I hope this helps everyone here – this topic is actually more important than it might seem at first glance.
