Hello everyone, I am planning to install an Ikea Metod kitchen in my rental apartment. Since I want to work as carefully and neatly as possible—after all, it concerns the condition of the rental property—I have a few questions: How can I mount the Metod kitchen cabinets securely and firmly to the wall without causing unnecessary damage? Are there specific techniques or preferred materials (e.g., types of wall anchors, screws) that are particularly suitable for fastening in rental apartments? I also want to make sure that everything can be removed with as little residue and repair work as possible when I eventually move out. I would appreciate any tips on precise alignment, the choice of screws and wall anchors, and how to avoid wall damage!

Hello Winfrid, this is a very good and sensible question, especially when installing kitchen cabinets in rental apartments, where careful planning is essential.

First, it is important to know the wall construction (e.g. concrete, brick, drywall). In rental apartments, drywall or thinner materials are often used, which makes fastening more complicated.

Here is a detailed step-by-step guide:

- Check the wall: Use a stud finder or hammer drill to determine the wall type.
- Fastening materials: For concrete or brick, use traditional anchors (nylon or metal); for drywall, be sure to use cavity anchors (e.g. toggle anchors or air-driven anchors).
- Load distribution: Metod cabinets are relatively heavy and should be securely anchored to the wall at multiple points horizontally – at least three, and four for wider units.
- Use mounting rails: Ikea Metod sets often recommend a mounting rail that is fixed to the wall, from which the cabinets are hung. This provides extra stability and makes later removal easier and without damage, as only the rail requires extensive drilling.
- Distance from the wall and alignment: It is important that the cabinets are perfectly level, ideally using a spirit level. Adjustable feet on the cabinets should be used to compensate for uneven floors.
- Adjust screw length: Screws should reach deep enough into the anchor but not be too long to avoid damaging water pipes or electrical cables.

Regarding residue-free removal: mounting rails are a major advantage because the drilling-intensive points exist only once, and the cabinets can be simply lifted off the hooks. Make sure to fill holes with filler material and use standardized anchors whenever possible.

Are there any specific wall types in your place? That way I can advise you more precisely.

Thank you very much for the detailed information, Filippo.

The walls in my apartment are mainly brick masonry, not plastered, only covered with a thin coat of paint. Therefore, I think standard wall plugs should work, right?

Regarding the mounting rail: Does that mean I first attach a horizontal rail to the wall, on which I then hang the cabinets? That sounds reasonable and would probably make the process easier.

Is there anything else to consider regarding alignment in a rental apartment, for example, when using a spirit level or adjustable feet? I just want to avoid the cabinets hanging crookedly later on, which could cause more trouble with the landlord.

What about fastening the baseboards? They shouldn’t break off or come loose all the time since they are often not very sturdy.

Hello Winfrid, regarding your specific situation with brick masonry, I can offer the following recommendations:

1. Anchor selection: For brick walls, universal nylon anchors are usually sufficient, as long as they match the screw diameter.

2. Mounting rail: Yes, this is the right approach. First, attach the mounting rail horizontally, using a spirit level to ensure it is perfectly straight. The rail will later bear the weight and provide a more stable, evenly distributed support.

3. Alignment: Be sure to use a high-quality spirit level or a digital level. Check multiple times after installing the rail, as small deviations can have a significant impact on the final installation.

4. Leveling feet: These are very helpful, especially on slightly uneven floors. They assist in precisely aligning the cabinet and ensuring the doors close properly later on.

5. Baseboards: Self-adhesive mounting foam strips combined with small screws fixed into the baseboard, but not into the wall, are recommended. This provides stability and usually allows for clean removal when uninstalling.

6. After removal: Fill the holes with an appropriate filler that is suitable for brick walls.

Avoid drilling into joints or soft spots, as this weakens the anchors.

Always screw directly into the brick wall, not into the mortar joints.

Use nylon wall plugs and matching screws, and install a mounting rail.

To adjust, use leveling feet and ensure everything is perfectly horizontal.

I understand well why you’re concerned, especially when living in a rental apartment. It is really important to choose a clean and reversible solution to avoid any issues with the landlord later on.

Building on that: if you properly fill the holes and even slightly repaint the wall areas afterward, the damage is hardly noticeable. This can greatly improve the landlord’s impression when you move out and also demonstrates your care.

I once mounted Ikea cabinets in a rental apartment using a mounting rail because securely hanging the cabinets was important to me. Afterwards, I filled the holes and applied a fresh coat of paint—the landlord had no complaints. Important: take your time with this step and use quality filler.
