Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question regarding the care of my Ikea Hemnes furniture. Since these items are heavily used in our household – whether by children, pets, or frequent use – I am looking for a cleaning method that is as gentle but effective as possible. It is especially important to me that the wood surface does not get damaged and that the typical patina or natural look is preserved.

Does anyone have proven cleaning methods or special care products they would recommend? How do you deal with stubborn stains and scratches without damaging the surface? Are there things to avoid when using and cleaning Hemnes furniture intensively?

I would appreciate detailed tips, preferably with explanations of why they work or don’t work. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello Konrad7,

to thoroughly answer your question about gentle and effective cleaning of heavily used Ikea Hemnes furniture, we first need to look at the material characteristics of this series: Hemnes furniture is mostly made of solid pine, treated with either lacquer or oil. Depending on the surface (lacquered or oiled), the care requirements differ significantly.

For lacquered surfaces, I recommend mild cleaning with a neutral detergent, such as a small amount of pH-neutral soap in lukewarm water. It is important to use a soft cloth and to wipe the surface dry afterward, as standing moisture can damage the wood. For stubborn stains, a slightly damp microfiber cloth can be used, but never harsh abrasive cleaners or steel wool, as these can damage the lacquer layer.

Oiled surfaces require very careful handling: aggressive cleaners must be avoided because they remove the oil. Instead, you should use special wood care oils or waxes that nourish the wood and protect the surface. Minor scratches can often be repaired with wood care oil by working the oil into the scratches.

Another important aspect: to reduce scratches and wear, frequently used furniture should be treated regularly with appropriate maintenance products. These create a protective layer on the surface that reduces wear.

Have you already tried any products on your furniture? Are there specific types of stains or usage scenarios you would like us to address in more detail? That way, I can give you even more tailored advice.

Hey Konrad7 and all other Hemnes fans!

I have to say, I really find the furniture charming, and yes, it’s quite durable, but cleaning can sometimes take its toll. 😅

That’s absolutely true – I once tried cleaning my furniture with some random cleaning product, and the result was a bit unpleasant. Since then, I prefer following tips from people like Nathanaelk.

My simple advice would be: It’s best to wipe down the surfaces gently with a damp cloth (not wet!) right after meals or kids’ crafts, then dry them off. For special stains, like red wine or grease, I prefer a mix of warm water with a tiny drop of mild dish soap. That works perfectly without worrying about damaging the finish.

And yes, caution with harsh cleaners is essential to keep the cozy, natural feel of the Hemnes series.

By the way, I’m curious how Konrad7 manages with pets? Do they also slide across the tables? I always worry their claws might get caught... 😁

Summary of care for Ikea Hemnes under heavy use:

- Material: mostly solid pine wood, either lacquered or oiled
- Lacquered surfaces: clean with pH-neutral soap, avoid leaving water standing
- Oiled surfaces: avoid harsh cleaners, use maintenance oils or waxes
- Respond quickly to food or liquid stains to prevent deep damage
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or scratching tools

To prevent scratches, I recommend using felt pads under movable objects and following usage guidelines, such as not placing heavy or sharp-edged items directly on the furniture.

Question for Konrad7: What type of surface does your furniture have (lacquered or oiled), and what is the main type of use? Only then can accurate advice be given.

Thanks for the detailed information. I mostly have painted Hemnes furniture, especially the sideboard and some shelves. However, there is some wear from glasses sometimes being placed down while wet, and from the kids using markers there. Luckily, the stains are usually liquid, but I occasionally have scratches from moving books and decorations.

I don’t have any pets, so it’s a bit less hectic, but the kids and very frequent use really wear down the surface.

Your advice about reacting quickly makes sense. How important is it to dry immediately after cleaning? Would leaving moisture behind cause discoloration or damage?

Thank you very much, I’m happy to receive more practical tips that can be easily applied in everyday life.

Always wipe down immediately after cleaning with a dry, soft cloth. This prevents water spots and wood swelling.

Do not use harsh cleaners. For stains, use warm water with a drop of dish soap, then dry immediately.

For maintenance: Apply furniture polish or wood oil for lacquered surfaces two to three times a year to maintain the protective layer.

Avoid abrasive sponges and standing water.
