Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of installing Ikea Metod hinges on my new kitchen cabinets properly and, above all, in a way that ensures long-lasting durability. The Ikea instructions are generally good, but I still have some questions regarding the stability and long-term functionality of the hinges.
Specifically, I am interested in:
- Which types and sizes of screws are optimal for the installation, especially when my carcass material is made of thicker particleboard?
- How exactly should the hinges be adjusted to prevent them from loosening after a short time or the doors from rubbing?
- Are there any special mounting tips to guarantee lasting load-bearing capacity, for example with heavy fronts?
- Is it worthwhile to use additional wood glue or similar aids when screwing in the screws?
I would really appreciate detailed, practical tips that reflect experience with the Metod series specifically in everyday kitchen use.
Thank you very much in advance!

Wood glue is not necessary – as long as the screws are firmly seated in the carcass, they will hold permanently.I completely agree. I would just add that when using particle boards with lower density (e.g., very inexpensive raw materials), screw anchors can sometimes be helpful to reinforce the screw holding. However, this is rather rare, and Ikea boards are well manufactured in this regard.
I also make sure to hold the screwdriver perpendicular to the board so the screws do not go in at an angle. This significantly increases strength and minimizes pull-out.
If you want to be extra cautious, you can place small felt or rubber pads on the hinge contact surface after assembly and adjustment to reduce any vibrations and noise.

The lateral adjustment allows for +/- 2 mm (0.08 inches), which is sufficient for perfect door alignment.Importantly, these adjustment options are also crucial when cabinet fronts slightly sag after extended use or change minimally due to temperature and humidity fluctuations.
Regular inspection and adjustment, if necessary, are therefore worthwhile. With Ikea Metod, the hinges are designed so that this can be done easily without removing the doors.
Investing some time early on will save you from issues like wobbly doors or unwanted rubbing in the long run.
This topic always reveals some interesting insights! 😄
Here’s a casual tip: If you want to be absolutely sure your hinges will last, do a little “dance test” with the door after tightening the screws. Move it in all directions, do a bit of a “helicopter blade” motion, and listen for any strange noises.
If it squeaks or wobbles, adjust accordingly! The Metod hinges are actually cleverly designed and handle that with quite a bit of tolerance.
Good luck with the installation—soon you’ll have the perfect kitchen door symphony in action! 😉
