Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question about repairing my slightly misaligned Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet door. The door is installed but does not sit flush with the adjacent doors and hangs slightly crooked downward. The hinges are correctly mounted, but I suspect that either the hinge adjustment or the mounting hardware is not quite optimal, causing the door to be misaligned.

I would like to properly realign the door without it becoming too loose or misaligned again after a short time. Are there any proven methods or tips for optimally adjusting a Metod kitchen cabinet door, including a brief overview of the correct way to adjust the hinges? Also, which tools are best suited for this task?

I look forward to your advice, preferably with step-by-step instructions on how to proceed in order to fix the problem permanently.

Hello Archibaldt, the issue of properly repairing a misaligned Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet door is quite common and can be effectively resolved with a structured approach.

First: Metod cabinets use the typical 3-way adjustment screws on the inner hinges (top and bottom of the door frame). These usually adjust:
- the horizontal alignment (left/right)
- the vertical alignment (up/down)
- the depth (pressure of the door against the cabinet carcass)

Repair steps:
- Open the door fully and locate the adjustment screws on both hinges.
- First, check the horizontal alignment to see if the door is shifted to one side, and adjust the left and right screws accordingly.
- Next, adjust the vertical screw to influence the height so the door does not sag downward.
- Finally, set the depth so that the door sits flush and closes properly.

Important: With Ikea Metod hinges, a slight turn often causes noticeable movement of the door. Turn carefully and keep testing the door’s position in between adjustments.

Tools: A standard Phillips screwdriver usually fits perfectly. Sometimes a narrower screwdriver is needed for screws located deeper inside.

Summary: Targeted adjustment of the three directions at the top and bottom hinges is the key. If the door is severely warped, you can also realign the hinges or check for damaged parts, but usually fine-tuning is sufficient.

If you need more details, I’m happy to help.

In short: open the door, locate the hinge screws, adjust horizontally and vertically, then adjust the depth. Use a Phillips screwdriver. Done.

I can only agree – quickly adjust with a narrow screwdriver and just like that, everything is crooked no more. For me, it has always helped to patiently make small adjustments, checking and feeling the door after each turn.

A little tip: If you press the screws too hard, the hinges can get stuck, so it’s better to be a bit gentler. But don’t worry, this isn’t rocket science – more like a delicate balancing act, almost like yoga for your kitchen cabinets.

That’s correct, it happens surprisingly often, especially with people who aren’t used to working with screws. To clarify again: The screws on Metod hinges are not mounting screws but adjustment screws. They need to be properly adjusted but turned without force.

If the door starts sagging again after some time, you should check whether the hinges or the cabinet body are damaged, for example, fine cracks around the drill holes. Another option is if the material gives slightly, you can use small wooden shims or washers behind the hinges to help compensate.

If you haven’t tried that yet, I can gladly explain how to use washers to achieve a more permanent fixing.

I’m always fascinated by how this "simple" Ikea kitchen often ends up being a nightmare for many DIYers. It’s almost like a hobby in itself to constantly have to adjust and tighten the doors on Metod cabinets. Ikea seems to have sacrificed stability for easier installation.

You could almost say the misalignment is intentional, so there’s always something to fix. Those who combine more expensive hinges with sturdy cabinet boxes using metal screws have already won half the battle. But no, the Ikea original is made for the mass market and is therefore more prone to issues.

My advice: if the door is constantly hanging crooked, it’s better to install higher-quality hinges right away and avoid all the hassle.
