Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a Malm chest of drawers from IKEA, and after some use, unfortunately the corners of the drawers and partially also the front panels have started to show fine cracks. I am interested in how to reliably prevent cracks in MALM furniture. I suspect that the material and the load play a role, but maybe there are also tips on care or proper use that could help. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to protect MALM furniture from such damage? Thanks in advance!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the really helpful and detailed answers! In summary, I see that the surroundings (temperature, humidity), the usage (stress, treatment), and even small protective measures (coasters, suitable care products) are crucial.

One last question: How effective are protective films or transparent varnish coatings for prevention? I have read that some users try these, but I am not sure about Malm, as it might restrict the wood’s breathing and potentially cause other damage.

Regarding protective films or lacquer coatings: For MALM, they are usually not worthwhile. The surface is already coated with melamine, so a lacquer layer or film mainly affects the appearance rather than the functionality. Additionally, lacquers could increase stress due to the chipboard underneath. It is better to focus on the right environment and careful handling.
