Hello everyone,

I am planning a move soon and need to transport several BILLY shelves from IKEA. I am aware that the shelves, especially the shelves and back panels, are quite vulnerable to damage such as scratches, edge chipping, or even warping. My specific question is: What proven methods, packing materials, or precautions would you recommend to ensure the BILLY shelves remain undamaged during transport?

I am particularly interested in how to best protect the shelves when they are lying in a van or car, whether the shelves should be secured separately, and if you have any experience with padding, plastic wraps, or other protective measures.

Thank you for your advice!

Hey luboso!

It’s great that you’re so organized about transporting your BILLY shelves! 🙂 My recommendation is definitely to transport the shelves disassembled if possible. The individual parts, especially the shelves, should be wrapped in bubble wrap. This helps prevent dents and scratches.

Also, it’s very helpful to transport the back panels separately, as they are usually very thin and can break easily. It’s best to use sturdy boxes or at least a blanket underneath the shelf parts.

I always carry straps to secure the shelf parts so they don’t move around during transit. A little tip: if you have extra space, use firm foam mats or rolled-up blankets as cushions between the shelf parts – this protects them from shocks and impacts.

Good luck with your move and don’t forget to handle everything carefully! You’ll do great! ;-)

Hello,

to minimize the risk of damage to BILLY shelves during transport, I recommend the following systematic approach:

1. Disassembly: The shelves should be taken apart into their individual components. This reduces the surface area vulnerable to damage.

2. Protection of the Most Fragile Parts: The back panels are usually made of thinner particleboard and are particularly fragile. These should be separately padded, for example with bubble wrap or furniture felt.

3. Packaging: Use sturdy outer packaging or alternative protective materials (blankets, foam) to protect edges and surfaces.

4. Securing: All parts should be secured as much as possible inside the transport vehicle to prevent movement. Ratchet straps or tie-down straps work well for this.

5. Careful Loading: Heavy items should only be placed below and not on top of the shelf components to avoid deformation.

In conclusion, careful preparation and adequate protection significantly contribute to preserving the condition of the shelves.

I hope this overview is helpful to you.

I completely agree, bubble wrap really is the unsung hero during furniture moves! 🙂

Exactly, many people don’t realize that. I once transported my BILLY on a stack of books – not the smartest move! ;-)

A small additional tip from me: If you don’t have suitable boxes ready, just use large, thick blankets rolled lengthwise between the individual boards as a kind of shock absorber. It greatly increases safety and makes everything much more flexible.

Also, if you’re two people, load the shelves with plenty of communication – that way you avoid, for example, a corner bumping harshly against the car door.

Good luck with your next move – hope everything arrives in perfect condition! :-)
