Hello everyone,
I have an IKEA BILLY bookshelf with doors that unfortunately squeak when opened. The noise is quite annoying, and I have already tried inspecting the hinges closely. However, I’m not sure how to stop the squeaking effectively without causing damage or reducing functionality.
Has anyone had experience with making the BILLY doors silent permanently? It would be great if the tips focus on the mechanical parts—such as lubricants, hinge adjustments, or possibly replacing components.
Thanks in advance for reading and for your suggestions!

Does anyone have experience with permanently stopping the BILLY doors from squeaking?Hi Kautu! Oh yes, I’m very familiar with the squeaking of BILLY doors – it’s like a sneaky ninja disrupting the peace in the morning 😉
My advice: a simple drop of oil or a little silicone spray on the hinges works wonders. Just don’t use too much, or it will get sticky and attract dust. I like to use a light sewing machine oil as it doesn’t gum up easily.
If you’ve already tried that, check if the hinge screws are tight. Loose screws can also cause noise. Sometimes a slight adjustment of the hinges helps so the doors aren’t too tight.
Good luck – and keep us updated when the squeaking finally stops! 🙂

Additionally, you can slightly adjust the hinges – they are often slightly misaligned, which causes the squeaking.
Hello Kautu,
to really prevent the squeaking of the BILLY doors, you should systematically address the cause. First, I recommend thoroughly cleaning the hinges, as dirt and debris are often the source of the noise. You can use a lint-free cloth and, if necessary, some isopropyl alcohol for this.
Afterwards, using a suitable lubricant is advisable. Silicone spray is usually ideal because it does not become sticky and does not damage plastic parts. Sewing machine oil is an alternative, but you need to be careful to avoid dripping onto other furniture parts.
If the hinges are adjustable (which they generally are for BILLY), make sure the doors are properly aligned and not pressing too tightly. Excessive tension can increase the squeaking.
It is also important to check the screws on the hinge and tighten them if needed, as even slight looseness can cause annoying noises.
I hope this helps! If you want, I can also provide a step-by-step guide for adjusting the hinges.
