Good morning everyone, I recently installed my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and noticed that the ventilation inside is quite limited. Since kitchen cabinets are usually placed close to walls or built directly next to each other, I am concerned that moisture or possibly odors could accumulate, which would not only be unhygienic but could also affect the durability of the furniture. Therefore, I would like to ask: How can I effectively improve the ventilation of my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to prevent moisture buildup without compromising the appearance or functionality of the cabinets? Are there proven methods or tips, for example regarding special ventilation slots, air vents, or structural modifications that are easy to implement? I am also interested in whether the use of passive or active ventilation systems is recommended for such furniture and what I should consider in this regard. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

The topic of ventilation for IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets should be approached in a structured manner. Generally, passive ventilation is usually sufficient as long as the cabinets are not constantly exposed to a humid environment.

A proven method is the installation of ventilation grilles, which can be discreetly mounted on the bottom edges or sides of the cabinet doors. This allows for air exchange without visible alterations to the front.

Alternatively, installing small air vents at the cabinet base or back is an option, especially when the cabinet carcass is directly against the wall. It is essential to follow IKEA’s assembly instructions closely in this case to avoid voiding any warranty claims.

The use of active systems, such as small, quiet fans, is also possible but is typically oversized and increases maintenance requirements.

In conclusion: Regular room ventilation is generally more important than technical measures on the cabinet itself.

Absolutely. Additionally, I recommend allowing enough space between the back of the cabinet and the wall during planning. An open plinth area or a gap at the base also enables air circulation and prevents moisture buildup.

If the cabinet doors close very tightly, consider small spacers at the top and bottom of the doors to support airflow without affecting the appearance.

Also, keep an eye on sources of moisture. If it is a kitchen with high steam production, integrated extractor hoods and regular room ventilation are essential measures.

Installing ventilation grilles on the sides or undersides of the cabinets is often sufficient.

Small air gaps at the doors also improve air circulation.

If in doubt, leave the plinth ventilated.
