Hello everyone, I have a question for those who already own furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series or have experience with its durability. I am interested in how to make these pieces last as long as possible, as they represent a certain investment for me and I want to keep them in good condition for as long as I can. This is not only about daily care but especially about preventive measures or proven tips to reduce wear and tear or minimize the need for repairs. I would appreciate concrete advice on treating the wood surfaces, correct assembly and use, as well as avoiding common weak points. Thank you in advance for your insights!
For the durability of IKEA Hemnes furniture, I initially recommend careful assembly according to the instructions, as errors during this process often cause premature wear, especially in drawers and fittings. Additionally, it is advisable to clean the furniture regularly, but only with mild, damp cloths without using harsh cleaning agents, as these can damage the surface. Tightening the screws once a year significantly improves stability. Furthermore, when assembling, it is beneficial to apply wood glue at the joints to reinforce the structure. Moisture should be strictly avoided, since Hemnes furniture, made of solid wood components, is sturdy but sensitive to swelling and shrinking. An indoor climate with 40-60% humidity is ideal.
Here is a brief guide for the care and safety of the Hemnes series:
- During assembly: Always use a cordless screwdriver with torque control to avoid over-tightening the material.
- Wood surfaces: Regularly treat with a suitable wood wax or natural oil to maintain the surface and protect against moisture.
- Load limits: Avoid overloading drawers and shelves. Use only the maximum load capacity specified by the manufacturer.
- Protection from UV light: Do not place the furniture in direct sunlight, as this will cause the color and wood to fade over time.
Finally, a tip: For heavily used areas, such as benches or desks, it is worthwhile to add felt or rubber pads to the feet to improve stability and prevent unwanted movement.

JEREMIAH381 Jul 2022 14:42I can only emphasize the points just mentioned. I have Hemnes furniture at home and was initially quite unsure if it would live up to IKEA’s promises. What helped me the most was how I cared for it: I only use a slightly damp cloth when dusting, and since I started doing that, the furniture looks much fresher. My biggest issue was once a drawer that didn’t slide smoothly. I fixed this by applying a bit of paraffin to the drawer rail profile – now it slides smoothly again. Maybe this tip will be helpful to someone else as well.
Interesting, the use of paraffin for maintenance was also mentioned here. While I consider it a practical idea, I would like to follow up: Is there any evidence that this lubricant application does not damage the rails over time or affect the surrounding wood?
Regarding assembly: I often see that with IKEA furniture, parts are reduced despite the instructions, for example thinner screws or fewer connecting fittings. This weakens system furniture like Hemnes in the long term. My question: Does anyone know if, and how, the stability can be improved by replacing certain fittings? Or is this not advisable because the material elsewhere cannot withstand it?

Are there any studies or evidence showing that this lubricant application does not damage the rails over time or affect the surrounding wood? From a technical perspective, paraffin is a proven lubricant for metal rails and is often recommended because it leaves no residue and is non-aggressive. It is important to clean the surface before applying it to avoid trapping any dirt. There are also silicone-based lubricants that work well, provided they do not contain oils that might stain the wood.
Regarding the fittings: it is true that IKEA components are designed to be functional but not oversized. Carefully replacing them with higher-quality screws or reinforcements can generally extend the service life, but proper fit must be ensured to avoid stress on the material. The wood itself ultimately limits the lifespan, not just the connection technique.
