Hello everyone, I am currently facing the problem that I want to install BILLY shelves from IKEA in my rental apartment, but due to the landlord’s requirements, no wall drilling is allowed. My question is therefore: What options are there to securely and stably attach BILLY shelves without damaging the wall, meaning without drilling?

I am aware that BILLY shelves are usually anchored in the wall with plugs and screws, but I am really looking for a practical and reliable alternative that respects tenant protections and also lasts long term.

Perhaps someone has experience with tension or clamp solutions, residue-free adhesives, or other methods suitable for mounting BILLY shelves? I look forward to your suggestions and tips!

I would recommend using a wall mounting system with tension profiles. These run from floor to ceiling and hold the shelf securely without drilling.

Alternatively, there are heavy-duty shelf brackets that can be leaned against the wall and screwed to the shelf, providing stability.

This is a really interesting question because “secure” and “no drilling” often contradict each other. There are some products that claim to mount shelves using adhesive or special hooks, but reliably supporting heavy shelves like BILLY is difficult without mechanical anchoring.

Regarding clamp- or tension-based solutions: the classic “telescoping shelf” from floor to ceiling, as already mentioned, can be an option if your ceiling height fits. However, you should check whether the stability is sufficient, especially under the weight of books.

Adhesives are often too unreliable; shelves may slip after a while, or adhesive strips can still damage the wall when removed.

My advice: It might be better to choose shelves with a wide base or freestanding shelving units if drilling is absolutely out of the question.

Here is a brief overview of practical methods to secure BILLY shelves in rental apartments without drilling into the walls:

1. Tension shelves/telescopic solutions: These shelves use tension rods from floor to ceiling. Advantage: No drilling required, shelf stands stable. Disadvantage: Possibly limited flexibility in positioning.

2. Securing with furniture brackets and slotted strips: Instead of drilling into the wall, try to attach the shelves with large, heavy brackets to adjacent furniture or frames.

3. Residue-free adhesive solutions: There are adhesive tapes and glues like 3M Command Strips, but these usually only hold light loads – not really suitable for heavy shelves like BILLY.

4. Freestanding shelving systems: An alternative is to place a shelf with a significantly wider base plate or use it as a room divider.

5. Anti-tip securing: Important, even without wall mounting, the shelf should be made tip-proof – e.g., by placing weights at the bottom or floor anchors where allowed.

Summary: Tension shelves are probably the best solution. The other methods are more suitable for light or small shelves.

Hey,

I had the same issue and decided on an elegant tension rod solution. 😊

They are easy to install, you can then screw the shelf onto them, and it stands rock solid – without any holes in the wall! The only important thing is to measure the ceiling height accurately so the rod fits properly. I even screwed the shelf in twice to make sure nothing wobbles.

I completely agree with that; anything else would be a bit risky for a BILLY filled with many books. Adhesive unfortunately doesn’t hold up long, and I’m not a fan of wobbly systems, especially when visiting kids are running around. 😉

Tensioning solutions are definitely the best choice, as long as the ceiling is not too high. Another option is freestanding shelves with extra heavy base plates.

Adhesive strips or hooks on the wall are hardly suitable for BILLY shelves due to weight and stability concerns.

It is also possible to suspend shelves from the ceiling using steel cables, if this is allowed and drilling is permitted. However, it will be difficult without drilling.
