Hello everyone,

For some time now, I've had a problem with my BILLY shelving unit where the drawers squeak noticeably when I open or close them. It sounds like the metal rails or plastic sliders are rubbing against each other, which is quite annoying.

I have already tried removing the drawer and cleaning the runners, but without success. Are there any tried-and-true methods to fix squeaky drawers or at least reduce the noise? I’d prefer to avoid ordering expensive replacement parts, so it would be great if someone has tips for a simple and lasting solution. Thanks in advance!

Hello tan_go,

Your description of the squeaking on the metal tracks fits well with typical wear or insufficient lubrication. My advice is to first thoroughly clean the tracks—preferably with a dry cloth to remove dust and old residues. After that, I recommend using a silicone spray.

It is important not to use WD-40 or oil, as these often attract dirt and can make the problem worse. Silicone spray provides a thin, clean lubricating layer that stays slippery over time.

If the plastic sliders are damaged, you can often buy replacements individually at a hardware store or use some Teflon tape to reduce friction.

Good luck!

Hello tan_go,

I want to go a bit deeper into this topic because it is often underestimated. The squeaking noise on BILLY drawers usually comes from micro-movements between the rails and the sliding elements, which are made of plastic.

First, you should fully remove the drawer from the shelving unit and, if necessary, unscrew the rails – they are usually fixed with small screws. Then clean all surfaces thoroughly, ideally with an isopropyl-based cleaner, to completely remove grease and old lubricants.

After that, I recommend using a special dry Teflon spray, which is excellent for this kind of application. It can be applied sparingly, does not attract dirt, and lasts a long time. It is important to apply only a small amount and then move the rails back and forth several times so that the coating distributes evenly.

I can only confirm this. Oils tend to settle with use and make the squeaking worse.

Can you tell me whether the squeaking happens only when opening or also when closing? Understanding the exact movement can help, and it may be useful to lightly sand any rough contact surfaces.

Keep us updated!

Unfortunately, I’m familiar with this squeaking and can understand how annoying it is. What helped me was completely removing the drawers and carefully inspecting the runners. If it wasn’t just friction, I smoothed out small rough spots with fine sandpaper.

I also wanted to add that sometimes very dry air and dust can promote squeaking. So it’s advisable to keep the surrounding area clean to prevent particles from accumulating on the runners.

That would actually be interesting to know, as it can have different causes depending on the applied load.

Good morning,

I wanted to share a quick anecdote: I had a similar issue and managed to solve it with a trick I hadn’t expected. I simply applied a small amount of paraffin wax from my candle supply to the sliding rails—just a tiny bit. It melted gently from the drawer’s warmth and acted like a fine lubricant.

This completely eliminated the annoying squeaking and was cheap and quick to do. Maybe this could be an alternative for you if you don’t have silicone spray on hand. I found it really handy 🙂

Good luck with everything!
