Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe where the doors are no longer properly aligned – they hang crooked and do not close flush. After some research, I suspect the issue might be with the adjustment of the hinges, as the wardrobe itself is still stable. How can I specifically and step by step adjust or repair the doors of the Hemnes wardrobe so that they hang straight again? Are there any known weak points with the hinges or other common causes for crooked doors on this model? I have already tried slightly adjusting the screws, but the result was not satisfactory. I would appreciate detailed explanations and advice on which tools to best use and whether replacement parts might be necessary.

First, you should completely loosen the hinges and then realign them. Use a cordless drill with a small bit to avoid damaging the screws. After adjustment, be sure to open and close the door to check the fit.

This is a good starting point. With HEMNES doors, a slight height difference between the doors is often noticeable. I recommend paying attention to the two screws on the hinge: the one on the cabinet side adjusts the depth, and the one on the door side adjusts the height.

Here’s how you can proceed:
- Carefully open the door
- Loosen the screws on the hinge, but do not remove them completely
- Carefully lift or lower the door while checking the gap
- Slowly tighten the screws again once the alignment is correct

Tools: A Phillips screwdriver or a suitable bit for a cordless drill. If the hinges are loose, sometimes a small drop of wood glue in the screw holes can help, provided the threaded holes are not damaged.

If the doors are warped due to moisture, replacing the door might be necessary. IKEA offers replacement parts.

In the HEMNES series, the adjustment screws are usually hidden under a plastic cover on the hinge. You should:

- Carefully remove the plastic cover
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to adjust the following screws:
- Depth adjustment – to push the door closer to the frame
- Height adjustment – to raise or lower the door
- Side adjustment – to align the doors with each other

After making small adjustments, always check the closing mechanism to ensure nothing is jammed.

If the screws are worn and no longer tighten properly, replacement hinges might be necessary. In winter, I sometimes gently expand the door wood by applying a slightly damp cloth and then letting it dry. This can help if the doors are slightly warped.

With all this about adjusting screws, I wonder why IKEA didn’t just use a better hinge design for HEMNES, one that doesn’t cause these constant issues after a few years.

Also, who guarantees that doors won’t slowly shift over time in rooms with changing humidity or temperature? The usual advice to just tighten or adjust the screws often feels like a temporary fix rather than a real solution – maybe the hinges or the wood quality simply aren’t designed for long-lasting stability.

Sure, it’s easy to say "just adjust the screws," but that doesn’t address the fundamental problem of the materials and design. So the question is also how many times you end up repeating this process before getting truly frustrated.
