Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to create a storage solution for my various craft supplies and am considering using the Ikea Besta system for this purpose. My craft materials are very diverse, ranging from small beads, threads, and paints to scissors and cutting tools. I want to achieve a combination of well-organized storage and quick accessibility. At the same time, it should look visually appealing, as the unit will be placed in the living room.

I am interested in practical tips regarding the most effective choice of modules and interior layout of the Besta elements, as well as ideas for additional use of inserts, boxes, or other functional components. How have you set up your Besta cabinets for creative materials, if you have any? What dimensions, internal volume, and supplementary materials have helped? And last but not least: what challenges did you face during assembly or use that should be avoided?

Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

It’s best to use small plastic storage boxes that fit perfectly into the BESTA compartments. For frequently used items, use drawers; for other parts, stackable boxes work well. This way, you maintain clear organization and everything is easily accessible.

That is a very sensible approach, and this is exactly where the challenge with the BESTA system begins. My recommendation for a storage solution for craft materials using BESTA is to work systematically with multiple layers and to incorporate modular boxes as well.

- First, you should choose BESTA units with drawer modules – these allow flexible division of smaller items like beads or threads. You can organize the drawers yourself using dividers made of plastic or wood, or purchase ready-made inserts.

- For larger tools such as scissors, glue, or paint tubes, open boxes or storage baskets inside the cabinet work well and can be easily removed.

- Place frequently used materials in lower drawers or drawers at working height for quick access, so you don’t have to bend forward much.

- For paint containers or brushes, it can be worthwhile to install adjustable shelves within the BESTA system to make optimal use of space.

- Pay attention to dimensions: use STANDARD BESTA units with widths of 60cm (24 inches) and heights of 38cm (15 inches) – this size has proven to be the most versatile.

A common pitfall is the weight of fully loaded drawers – I recommend using high-quality drawer slides to prevent wear and tear.

Finally, I suggest making a list before purchasing of the craft materials you currently have and those you might add in the future – this way, you avoid having to completely reorganize later on.

I completely agree! A bit of space and flexibility are essential when crafting – and open boxes are great because you don’t have to pull out an entire drawer just to reach your favorite glue.

I’ve created a mix of transparent boxes and small drawers in my BESTA, which not only looks tidy but also makes crafting much more relaxed. One more tip: consider setting up a small, labelable system – it saves time and helps you find everything faster.

Good luck organizing! And remember: crafting should be fun – not frustrating because of long searches 😉
