Hello everyone,
I am planning to expand my apartment’s storage space using Ikea Besta systems, arranged as an L-shape along two adjoining walls. Since I want to make the best use of the available space, I am especially interested in how to combine the individual modules to ensure both storage capacity and flexibility in organizing the interior.
I am particularly concerned about: How do I find the right balance between closed and open units? What dimensions and depths make sense if I want to accommodate large binders or bigger decorative items? And how can I securely fasten everything, especially in the corner area, to ensure stability?
Does anyone have experience with an L-shaped setup using Besta modules and advice on selecting widths, heights, or connecting the units? I would appreciate any recommendations, even small details that pay off later. Thanks in advance!

For your dimensions, I would place two 60cm (24 inches) modules along the longer wall and two 40cm (16 inches) modules along the shorter wall. This way, you use the space more efficiently and avoid misalignment. The corners with open compartments can be well stabilized using corner connectors.
If you want to store file folders, it’s better to allow for a slightly greater height per shelf (around 38-40 cm (15-16 inches)).
Avoid excessively tall individual units to prevent having to reach above the top shelf too often.
A narrow open corner unit can be useful for decoration, as otherwise you might have unused space there.

It is important that you screw the individual Besta components together and additionally secure them to the wall. The corner solutions are stable if they have access points on both sides.
For filing cabinets, be sure to use shelves that can be adjusted from the inside, so you can make changes later on.

Additionally, I would recommend planning the corner with an open module, as already mentioned. This allows for a pleasant all-around view and prevents the corner from becoming an unused space.
Also, if the floor is not perfectly level, adjustable feet on the Besta module can compensate for unevenness. This is especially important with two adjacent walls, as it can become a problem if the modules do not sit precisely.

In the corner, you should make sure not to install back panels so access is possible from both sides – this makes it easier to use and creates a more open feel.Exactly, and to add: depending on whether the corners are used as passageways or purely for storage, you can also use half-height units to create a kind of bench or shelf. This makes the corner feel welcoming and practical.
Sometimes it’s also worthwhile to work with a narrow shelf so the balcony door isn’t blocked while still providing storage space.
I built my Besta combination in size L with a depth of 40cm (16 inches), which looks more delicate in tight spaces. For file folders, 40cm (16 inches) depth is more than enough, while for books, 30-35cm (12-14 inches) depending on their size is usually sufficient. The combination of open and closed compartments helps keep things organized and doesn’t appear too bulky.
