SedraHello everyone, I recently purchased some Ikea Besta furniture units for my home office and now want to equip them with power strips and cable grommets to organize the cables neatly and functionally. My question is: How can I smartly install power strips and cable pass-throughs in the Besta units without damaging the wood or compromising stability? Which locations are best suited for installing cable grommets, and what is the best way to fix power strips in place? I would prefer not to just drill holes that might look untidy later and am looking for tips on how to achieve a professional and clean solution. Does anyone have experience or tricks, for example using pre-made drill holes or special mounts? Thanks for your help!
Hello Sedra,
I’m happy to provide you with a clear, step-by-step guide on how to cleverly and professionally install power strips and cable grommets in Ikea Besta furniture:
- Planning: First, consider where the furniture will be placed and which devices you want to connect. This will help you determine the best positions for the power strip and the cable openings.
- Installing cable grommets: It’s best to use a hole saw with an appropriate diameter (about 60 mm (2.4 inches)) for the cable openings. The back panel or the side panels are especially suitable, as these can be easily unscrewed on Besta units. Make sure not to drill too close to an edge to avoid chipping.
- Protective rings and brushes: To make the cut edges neater and safer, use or install vinyl rings or brush grommets to prevent cables from being damaged by the edges.
- Mounting power strips: Most power strips have mounting holes that allow you to fix them inside the furniture wall with small screws. Alternatively, hook-and-loop tape or strong double-sided adhesive strips offer an easy installation method. I recommend screws, as they hold more securely.
- Avoiding damage: Work carefully with the drill and saw, and if needed, use masking tape as a guide to prevent wood splintering.
If you’re not very experienced with DIY, you can also replace the back panel with a thinner multiplex plywood sheet that you pre-drill cleanly.
I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Mounting power strips: Most power strips have mounting holes that you can use to attach them with small screws to the inside of the cabinet wall. Alternatively, there are Velcro strips or strong double-sided adhesive tapes that allow for easy installation. I recommend screws, as they provide a more secure hold.I fully agree with this. It’s important to install the power strip in a way that ensures good ventilation to prevent overheating. Also, the connection should not be under tension—so plan for enough cable length.
Regarding cable openings: make sure the holes are not too close to load-bearing surfaces. Although Besta furniture is made of relatively thin material, you should avoid making large cutouts that could compromise stability.
Another useful idea is to keep the back panel removable using small clips or Velcro strips, so you can rearrange cables without having to disassemble everything.
