Hello everyone,

I have IKEA Metod kitchen fronts at home with a matte finish. Now I’m facing the problem that I often leave unattractive streaks when cleaning, whether I use a regular all-purpose cloth or special kitchen cleaners. My question is: How can I clean IKEA Metod matte fronts without leaving streaks? Are there specific methods, materials, or home remedies that work particularly well to clean these fronts gently and effectively?

I am especially interested in cleaning techniques that preserve the matte surface’s appearance without relying on harsh chemicals. I would also like to know which types of microfiber cloths or sponges work best, and whether certain motions or drying methods are recommended.

Thank you in advance for your tips!

Hello Can48,

I can gladly provide you with a systematic guide on how I usually get matte IKEA Metod fronts clean and streak-free:

- First, I use a soft microfiber cloth, ideally one with a very fine weave, as coarser fibers can roughen the matte surface or leave fine scratches.
- Before cleaning, I slightly dampen the cloth with lukewarm water; usually, that’s all you need.
- If the surface is very dirty, I add a bit of mild dish soap to the water—no all-purpose cleaners, as they can sometimes be too harsh.
- Then I wipe in slow, circular motions. This is especially important to protect the matte finish.
- After cleaning with the damp cloth, I immediately dry the surface using a clean, dry microfiber cloth to prevent water spots or streaks.

A common mistake is using overly wet cloths or letting the surface air dry. This often leads to the dreaded streaks.

I also avoid rough sponges or aggressive chemical cleaners.

If you like, I can share more tips on how to handle stubborn stains.

Good start from you, LAURE-TA. You mention using mild dish soap, but do you also have an explanation for why conventional all-purpose cleaners are generally unsuitable?

Matte surfaces are sensitive because they have a different texture compared to high-gloss fronts. Sometimes cleaning steps with demineralized water also help me prevent lime scale spots. Lime residues can appear like streaks.

One thought: Are the streaks really residues, or could it be that some microfiber cloths release fibers that affect the matte finish? I ask because I have heard that the cloth material can have a significant impact on the result.

In the end, I would like to understand the physical effect behind how these streaks form during drying. Only then can they be effectively removed.

A brief addition: I have been focusing intensively on the surface care of kitchen cabinet fronts and find the topic very interesting, especially with matte surfaces, such as those on IKEA Metod fronts.

The matte finish is usually created by a special coating or laminate with microscopic textures that prevent scattered light and thus give the matte appearance. This very texture makes cleaning tricky because overly wet methods or rough brushes can damage or roughen the surface.

My advice in several steps:

- Use only cold to lukewarm water. Hot water can damage the finish.
- For cleaning agents, a small amount of pH-neutral dish soap is suitable; never use alkaline or acidic cleaners.
- Use microfiber cloths without chemical treatments; a freshly washed cloth is ideal.
- Cleaning should always be done with gentle, almost caressing movements. Rubbing directly over heavy dirt can cause tiny micro-scratches.
- Dry wiping is essential: after damp wiping, always use an absorbent, clean cloth to dry the surface immediately to remove water droplets.

Finally, a question: What exactly are you currently using for cleaning? Some kitchen cleaners contain silicones or waxes, which can leave a streaky film on matte surfaces.

I usually just use an all-purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth. The surface isn’t very dirty, but unfortunately streaks remain after cleaning.

That’s an interesting point. I always use the standard microfiber cloth from the supermarket, maybe that’s not ideal.

So far, I haven’t bought a special cleaner for matte surfaces, just the usual household products.

Thanks already for the many suggestions! I’ll try your tips and report back.

Hello Can48,

From my own experience, the choice of microfiber cloth is especially important for matte surfaces.

- Make sure your cloth has very fine, soft fibers, ideally with a high microfiber content (60-80% polyester and the rest polyamide).
- I avoid cloths with additives like fabric softeners, as these often leave residues.
- I also use two cloths: one for damp cleaning with plain water or a mild soapy solution, and then a second, dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture.

Sometimes special cleaning cloths designed for matte finishes can help, which you slightly dampen before use. Also, be careful not to get too much moisture on the surfaces, as it can be absorbed and may damage the material or cause stains.

From my side: avoid aggressive sprays or cleaners containing alcohol, as they can quickly deteriorate the surface.
