Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into ways to childproof the drawers of the IKEA BESTA system. Our little explorers are already eagerly grabbing everything they shouldn’t, and unfortunately, the BESTA drawers contain several items that are not safe for toddlers.

I am searching for practical solutions that can be installed with minimal effort, are sturdy, and do not significantly affect usability for adults. I am especially interested in mechanical or magnetic locks that can be retrofitted since the furniture is already assembled.

Does anyone have experience with such mechanisms or maybe even a DIY idea? I’m curious to hear tips on whether there are specific drawer locks for IKEA BESTA or if other child safety products work well in this case.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Could you please explain which tools and materials I will specifically need?

Exactly what Peone mentioned, plus a small magnetic rod to unlock the drawers! These usually come included in the sets or can be purchased separately.

I secured mine with a cordless drill – it saves time and ensures a strong hold. It’s also important to thoroughly clean the surface before attaching the brackets so that the glue or adhesive doesn’t slip.

And to encourage you: it’s not as complicated as it sounds at first. If you work carefully during installation and measure accurately, you will get a really solid result. Enjoy! 🎉

Hey everyone! ? I find this topic really interesting because we also have some IKEA Besta drawers here.

Personally, I’m a big fan of child-friendly solutions that are visually unobtrusive. Magnetic locks are great because they don’t stand out and don’t require much effort on the furniture itself.

Sometimes, though, you just have to accept that there’s no 100% protection—simply because kids are so clever. That’s why I also always keep truly dangerous items securely stored elsewhere and fit the drawers with child safety catches.

Pretty relaxed and with a good feeling. ?

Install magnetic locks, align them precisely, and tighten the screws. Then buy a small unlocking magnet. Done.

Alternatively: clamp fasteners that can be attached without drilling. That’s all there is to it.
