Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my new kitchen with an Ikea Metod kitchen island and want it to be not only visually appealing but especially functional, with as much practical storage space as possible. I am particularly interested in which combinations of cabinets, drawers, and organizer systems have proven effective for optimally and clearly storing pots, pans, kitchen tools, and pantry items.

Are there any special interior fittings or modifications that integrate well to maximize storage space? How do you handle the layout to avoid constantly dealing with corners or hard-to-reach areas?

I am very much looking forward to helpful tips and experiences from the community – especially how you have organized your Ikea Metod islands with smart storage solutions!

Regarding the question of how to equip an Ikea Metod kitchen island practically and with maximum storage space, I first recommend clear planning based on the exact workflow in the kitchen.

- Tall drawers are ideal for pots and pans because they allow for stackable and organized storage. The Metod drawers with soft-close function are very suitable for this.
- Organizer inserts are recommended for smaller kitchen tools in the top drawers.
- Corner solutions should be avoided whenever possible, as they make storage space inefficient; if the island has corners, pull-outs with drawers that are easily accessible work better there.
- Food supplies can be well organized in deep base cabinets using shelving systems or transparent boxes.

Furthermore, I recommend using the Metod inner drawers to create additional storage space in the deep cabinets that would otherwise remain unused. Combining different drawer heights is also essential to store various items ergonomically.

To explore the question in more detail: How do I build IKEA Metod kitchen islands with practical storage?

This topic requires a very detailed approach, especially depending on the size of the island and individual usage habits. I recommend the following structured process:

- Analyze the actual storage needs (e.g., which cooking appliances, how many pans, supplies, small items)
- Choose cabinet types: For the island, there are classic drawers, inner drawers, tall cabinets (e.g., for ovens as part of the island), and pull-outs with dividers.
- Interior fittings: IKEA offers a wide variety of organizers—such as dividers, cutlery inserts, and adjustable shelves.
- Ergonomics: Pay attention to handle positions to ensure comfortable operation of the pull-outs, and adjust the island height for tasks like cutting or food preparation.

Regarding placement, it is important that frequently used items are stored in the front drawers, while less frequently used items go into lower drawers or inner drawers.

A question for orientation: How large is your island, and are there already requirements for appliance integration? With this information, it is possible to recommend the best combination of Metod cabinets more precisely.

Question about orientation: How large is your island, and are there any existing requirements for appliance integration?

Thanks for asking! My island is 180 cm (71 inches) wide and 90 cm (35 inches) deep, so it’s quite compact. No appliances will be installed in it; it is purely for storage of cookware, cutting boards, and provisions. Ideally, the cabinets should be arranged so that I can quickly access the most important cooking items near the stove area.

My main difficulty is deciding whether to go for several smaller drawers or a few large, deep pull-outs. Also, how to best organize the interior without losing track of everything.

For this size, I recommend a combination of several shallow drawers along with one or two deep drawers.

- Shallow drawers on top are ideal for neatly organizing cutlery, cutting boards, or smaller kitchen tools. You can create specific compartments there using dividers.
- The deep drawers below are perfect for storing pots and pans. You can also use separate inserts to divide the space and improve organization.

The Metod series offers special internal organizers for vertically standing pans, as well as removable inserts for lids. This way, you can organize as much or as little as needed without the drawers turning into a cluttered mess.

Additionally, it’s worth integrating an inner drawer (a drawer within a drawer), where you can keep frequently used small items like pot holders, knives, or small kitchen utensils within easy reach without taking up extra space.

The most important thing is to load the drawers so that items used regularly are in front and easy to access. I arrange them in the order I need them for cooking – this creates a logical workflow.
